Lane snapper?
Fished off the beach Sunday morningcaught a couple of pomps, ladyfish and whiting. Also caught what looked like a lane snapper best I can tell. Is it possible to find them in so close? Wouldn't have met the min. length so I'd have thrown it back either way. Just curious as to what it could have been. Forgot my phone so no pics available.

Re: Lane snapper?
Congrats on some good catches! :yippee:
I'm curious what area were you fishing?
Young snapper are liable to turn up anywhere this time of year, especially after all the rough water we had last week!
Lane snapper look very similar to juvenile red snapper (BOTH have a black spot near the tail).
Lane snapper notice the horizontal yellow lines)

Juvenile American Red snapper (no yellow lines)

If it wasn't either of those, it likely could have been a mangrove (grey) snapper

hope this helps!

Re: Lane snapper?
Some species of grunts look a lot like lanes also. If you caught them from the beach that would be my knee jerk guess to what it was.

Re: Lane snapper?
Definitely not a mangrove, I've caught several of those before off the lights at night. Horizontal stripes match. Don't remember the black spot.
I'll google a pic of grunts.
Location was about half way down Ft. Morgan road.

Re: Lane snapper?
Definitely not a pigfish and pretty sure it wasn't a pinfish because of the vertical bars. Closest grunt was a Tomtate. Without a picture who knows???
