6500 series reel that can hold 250+ yards of at least 15# test mono on a 7-8' mh rod.
I have an older Shakespeare on an 8' Diawa glass rod that 30 years old and a new Okuma Stratus 65VS on a Basspro Brawler Rod.
    I like a 6-8" 27# single strand leader, #4 or #2 2x or 4x treble and a small swivel.

Good suggestions from CarlF---use the "search" feature for more options. For instance, I like 30# braided wire.

    What Carl said.

Also, as we get into Summer and the pier gets more crowded with anglers shoulder to shoulder at the octi, Hi-Vis yellow or green mono will help you, and others, see your line.

    Thanks guys.....

I have Hi-Vis yellow mono on my reels and like the way I can see it in the surf. We were down in OB May 13-21 and had a great time. Hope to be able to come back down at the end of August.

Do people use smaller reels spooled with braid when throwing lures for kings? seems like working an X-Rap with a 6000 size reel would get old really quick.

I usually use a Penn Battle 4000 with 20 lb braid and lite Allstar rod but I'm primarily fishing for Spanish Kings are just a byproduct Caught 5 one day like this Nice comfortable lightweight outfit with power which does not wear you out If the Kings are there and hitting plugs I then move up to a Penn Battle 5000 or Penn 5500 These two are also my bubble rig outfits when there are many sharks around and I have to horse Spanish in You are on target Try to make your set up as comfortable as you can as it's hard work sometimes throwing an artificial particularly when the fish are not active

Some guys do, I just use my old Diawa rod & shakespreare reel with 15# mono. Its a little lighter action and I can load up the rod and chunk a plug pretty far.

You can get by with a smaller reel and maybe 200 yards of line until you get that 30lb smoker going down current. You look down at the spool and you start to see metal. That is when you go back to spooling 300 yards on the reel. Been there.

I love the 4000 Battle II combo I got at J&M---it's light and strong. I had it spooled with 20# braid, and wish now I'd gone with 15# braid---easily get 300 yds. of that on it. I like everything about that rig, including the price.
