King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I've been thinking about this for a while and wanted some input from the out of towners that only get to fish once or twice a year and don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on a setup.Would there be any interest if J&M Tackle started renting one of our king rods with a Penn 750 spooled with 20lb mono for $50 a week or three days for $25? If there is some positive feedback we may start renting pier carts also.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
:headbang: ....not that I need to....but would if needed....much better then the rentals from the pier for sure!!!! ....might be a head ache for you though....some people don't have a clue on some equipment.... I have seen it from some that rented from the pier house and took it back to get another....and it was all there fault .....not the reels ....just saying
I always drive....well most of the time....and bring way more then I need.....but you never know when something will break, and need replaced....or heaven for bid get stolen....but there is so much better out there for the thieves to take then my crap.... :spank:

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Pier rentals are for the most part junk and most of them don't get the necessary maintenance they need to work right. I think it would be a good idea to have a few rentals John. A few times out and they'd pay for themselves. You'll have losses but having a deposit in the agreement would help cover those.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I would at least require a 100 dollar refundable deposit upfront just incase. Plus the 50 then you get your money back almost if they tear it up. JMHO

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I am not a good judge of rentals..... I try and come prepared....even the pier cart....one would have to have the room to transport ....then either bring back on a daily trip or have room where they are staying for longer term.....I make room for all.....but come for the sole purpose to fish....I agree with jigslinger you could have a few....and see how well it might do....and agree with pierboy on the deposit too.....I usually in the past have taken back home more then I have brought..... due to buying while there....except for last spring when all the gaff's made the one way trip :headbang: :fishing:

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Great idea ,think it would be great for people that come in once in a while.
-
Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Tell them up front that they have the option to buy after the rental agreement's over. You might make a few more sales that way too.
-
Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Be sure your liability insurance will cover when I use your rod and reel to embed a Gotcha into some random tourist walking behind me. :poke1:
But seriously, this might work well. Perhaps high end and low end equipment at different rates? You must have some repair items that are never picked up, or trade-ins, so the reels and rods are not junk but also not so pretty they are too tempting. I was going to follow up on the suggestion of a chance to purchase with a "rent-to-own" option where someone who rents perhaps 10 or X weeks over 2 or 3 years gets to own the rig.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Great idea, a pier cart rental would also be nice.
-
Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I know for a fact that some of my buddies who come down and fish with me for a day or two would jump at the chance to rent a good rig rather than transporting their on make due equipment for a couple of days.
It would also be nice to have a place at the pier to store your cart ,so as in my case, not having to take it apart and put it together every day . Something for a month or more at a time .

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Really like the pier cart idea personally. I'm in the grocery business and was just eyeing up an old grocery cart to convert
but as cars get smaller transporting it could be a problem. Have gone out on the pier many times with just the basics
only to have to walk back to the car and get the cooler and then get ice. Great way to make extra profit is too come up with a new unique
idea. Getting the message out would be the key!

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Offer an option with a guide included for a couple hours to show them the ropes, maybe? Rod, bait, and guide for $?$. Just a thought. Weeks worth of fun for not much.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Think it would be a good idea. I'm from Northern Wisconsin so my surf/pier fishing will be really limited. After reading about the crappy rental equipment at the pier I decided to purchase my own saltwater combo. Paid about $200.00 for it with my reasoning being I could at least use it for musky fishing up here.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I think it would be a good idea. I just stayed for 5 days and did not go out on the pier due to the weather we have had. But we also did not have the right gear for that type of fishing. My 15 year old knew that. Also what about the visitor that would want to fish off the beaches. Most guys from the midwest do not have long rods to make the necessary cast to get beyond the breakers. Rent some surf rods as well. And send a local kid with them to help out and pay him to fish. Someone like Ben_Mo_pelt or some of his buds. We spent the last couple of days yaking in a bayou catching a few specs. Fishing was good on Monday but learning to get a hook stuck in a spec was testing. Hopefully today will be better and then back to the snow.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Thanks to the guys at J&Ms for the specs . Got some good info there that fit the gear we had . First spec for myself and my son. Fun on an ultralight rod.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I like the idea, it's aggravating to transport my 8-9 ft rods the six hour ride to G.S.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
My first time posting...
I have been exploring this site as I plan for my trip (from Wisconsin) in late March to early April. I have since learned of the rod set up I can bring down, one I can purchase specifically for the pier, the bucket set-up I'll need, the cooler, the cart, etc.
However, I obviously will not be showing up with all of this (although most). I have been a bit surprised that at least a cart rental is not avaialble. Nevertheless, with my Great Lakes shore fishing gear, I'm sure I'll make due.
So, my vote is "Yes", I would rent much of the gear if made available. Heck, if I could get most, if not all gear, for less than a charter, it's worth it.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
Y'all leave the logistics part to me. A person getting a $100 deposit on a $300 combo would loose his :moon: in no time. Thanks for the input, were going to put a few together.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I like this idea. The surf rod rental really seems perfect for me. We stay out near Ft. Morgan when we visit. I would want one for the week, it's a good haul from out there to J&M's. Someone mentioned
storage lockers at the pier. You can bet that would be hit with with some.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
A credit card and a DL is more than sufficient 99% of the time on rentals, that's what most people do. If they don't bring it back, they just bought a new rod and reel. If the card is declined that's considered theft so you report it, and write it off with losses. It would be cool if you could set up sort of an intro package where people can get a lesson in fishing too. Speaking as someone who is a long LONG ways a way, and will likely have to take a plane to get back, a rental option would be great. Would really love if you not only had king gear but lighter gear, and surf rods too.

Re: King Mackerel rod & reel combo rental?
I think this is a great idea boss....I for one know it gives people the chance to fish with nice tackle thus helping them understand the advantages of a custom rod. Chris you left your hat at my house so I guess we will see you in June.
