Thread: Kayak/Fly fishing

I'm planning a trip in late October or early November to fly fish for Redfish. I plan to stay at the state park and possibly fish the lakes there and maybe little lagoon. Anyone have advice on where to put a kayak in on little lagoon? It would probably be too far to paddle from the park. Also does anyone have advice on what to use for fly fishing for reds? I have never fished the for any saltwater fish with a fly rod.

Launch your kayak at Jeff Friend Kayak Launch off Fort Morgan Rd, just shy of 6 miles from hwy 59. Never fly fished, cant help there.

In general reds have poor eyesight and go for large and noisy lures. Scent is also important to them. They are not exclusive bottom feeders, but do do feed from the bottom which is why you will see their tails sticking out of shallow water sometimes, especially near/around grass beds and shorelines. Flashy lures help in sunlight.

For large reds you need a wide-gapped, strong hook.

If you don't have luck in Little Lagoon try the Bon Secour River.

Yes I enjoyed going to Bon Secour, I intended to go again, but didn't make it. I put in at Aquila Seafood. BTW I didnt catch any redfish at Little Lagoon, just all the white trout you'd want, and a few specks.

Haven't fly fished from my kayak or caught a red on the fly but most of my luck has been on flashy closers and receivers. I have tried some disco shrimp and merkin crab patterns. The disco shrimp has a glass rattle in the body to help fish locate it. I'm considering spraying em down with an attractant.
