    kayak fishing

Any good kayak fishing out in the surf around GS/Ft Morgan? I'm thinking about doing some off shore kayak fishing this June. Not real far out but maybe 1/2- to a mile offshore or in that range. What species can I expect to catch out there that time of year? any suggestions? I'm focusing a lot on shrimp, pin fish and other live type baits.

look in the section pier fishing questions, and find the sticky post of 'Whats biting when ..." King Mac,, Spanish Mackeral , and add sharks to that list/

It's a little farther than you want, 2-1/2 to 3 miles, but the Minton nearshore reefs produce some nice fish. Red Snapper, triggers, beeliners, plus pelagics - you'll need a GPS at least, a fishfinder would be good.

The Dixey Bar produces well, but lots of current and some big wakes, so there is risk involved. I fish from an outboard, but I have caught nice kings between the bar and the ship channel fairly close to shore (1/4 mile or less). Plenty of Bull Redfish and small keepers sharks (Atlantic Sharpnose). Not advisable with a east or northeast wind - added to the current it's just too much to fight.

We have caught king close to shore a mile or so east of the bar in 15-19 foot of water.

Perdido pass area produces well fairly close in, but too much traffic/wakes right at the pass. Just east and west of the pass will usually produce Spanish fairly close to shore (plus ladyfish, hardtails, blues, etc.). Early morning is better before the para-sail boats get out - they can really crowd it especially on the west side.

If you are up to the trip the Minton nearshore reefs are #1.
People are shocked to see sharks in the water around here.

If you see natural water taste it. If it's salty it has sharks in it. If it's fresh it has alligators in it. If it's brackish it has both.

Jhatch I just take my yak out depending on weather, wind, etc. You will catch fish pass sand bar.i don't belong to kayak clubs and I probably should. There are guys on here who do belong to MBKFA-Mobile bay kayak fishing association. The kayak club has a forum good to check it out.Other clubs in area are GCKFA-Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing ass.And BCKFA-Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Ass.
GCKFA dropped there forum but have rigging clinic in February just goggle search there site. And BCKFA has a forum and I love the one they have called -hook-up - where you can buddy up and meet to fish.
I kayak in Mobile Bay and beaches along rt 180 if I am down there you are welcome to go out with us.I like nite spec fishing behind our development on the bay sometime it's a crap shoot but we do pretty good around docks and some brick walls.
You can get on this site and ask if anybody is kayak fishing out front,Little Lagoon etc and buddy up.
Send me a private message when your going and maybe we can go out and kayak fish.
Hope this helps some if it doesn't that's why I put club info on here where you can ask different Questions. If you go on to MBKFA ask for MONK he has helped me before and belongs on this great site and MBKFA.Take care. Tom

I yak fish a lot in the summer and do a lot of nearshore stuff. Ft Morgan/ Dixie Bar area is a bit hairy for a yak because of current and boat traffic. Same for the pass. I've gone out the pass before but it was a bit rough. You can beach launch at cotton bayou or any number of other places and get into kings fairly close to shore. I normally just cruise back and forth from the second sand bar to another 100-200 yards out, up and down the beach.

But really if you want to get on some serious offshore yak action its worth heading a little ways down to Navarre. I rarely fish GS anymore because I enjoy Navarre so much. Launching near the pier there there aren't any boats, water is clear enough to see bait and other things swimming underneath the yak. The biggest bonus is you stand a good chance of landing a mahi or maybe even a sail or tuna. I had a few days out this year where I landed kings, spanish, and mahi in the same day. All the biggest spanish I have caught have been there too. All about 1/2-1 mile from shore.

You can catch all the kings and Spanish you want just off the beach anywhere from 100 yards on and during the later summer months tarpon are also thick.

thanks Monk! I figure I'll spend most my days a few hundred yards off shore back and forth between bars. Also checked out some the rods you're building!! Very nice, love the lime green threads on that rod you built in May.

I am not trying to throw a cold dump in this but you do not say how much experience that you have in the FT Morgan Point area. Just a recomendation do not travel by your self to that area without help. Join MBKFA is an excelent and generally most of the guys will let you go. I have been Kayaking in the gulf for a number of years. Every year there are Kayakers that go out by them self and something happens now you are in trouble. Good luck and use your good since.
