#1 put reels and line on them poles.
It's a long way down to the water from the pier...
Oh be sure and add bait to a hook.
    next ;-)

+1 for line. Put all new line on. My stuff sits all year until I'm down so I swap line every year. Also, salt water rusts things so make sure to thouroughly rinse your gear EVERY day. Maybe twice. You can also take your spool off and hit your reel with wd-40. I say remove the spool because I'm not sure if the line would be damaged or the smell might scare the fish. Other than that look at the absolute essentials thread and get a good source to identify your catches.

On to actually fishing... one of the big differences I've noticed is that if you put bait in the water SOMETHING will eat it. It may be a cat fish/sting ray but unlike TN (I'm from Cookeville) you won't have a day of no bites. On the subject of catfish, the gafftopsail are good the hard heads are good. Their barbs are bad... really bad. Be careful.

I am no longer a 'fan' of WD-40 on fishing tackle.
It is NOT a proper lubricant and in the long run actually promotes corrosion of metal parts in saltwater.
Instead use a light reel oil (even 3-in-1) to keep the bearings and other vulnerable places on the reel properly lubricated.
Never 'over wash' your tackle with a strong water stream, a light rinse or wipe with a wet paper towel is usually all that is needed.

If you beach fish, remove the spool after each day's use and wipe away any sand grains or salt buildup and relube where needed.

    Hope this helps!

My suggestion would be to get fresh dead shrimp as bait. It'll catch pretty much anything. The fresher the better. If it's old, you prob won't catch much.
