They get at least twice that size off shore, but that one is fairly huge for one caught from the pier.

That's the big "dinner plate" size that pulls SO hard. The one pictured is about as big as you'll see.

I love catching spadefish - It's a different kind of challenge on small tackle! If the spanish/king bite dies down in the middle of the day, sometimes there's a school or two of spadefish near the end of the pier that can keep you busy for awhile. They're big-time jellyfish eaters!

Yeah, I saw a school off shore at Ft. Pierce, FL where they were big like that and I brought NOTHING with me to throw at them. It was before there was (or before I knew about) fishbites. On the pier, though - that's about as big as you'll see and about all you want to handle.

I've seen a couple bigger from the pier, one that Roger caught with a "silver cricket" and the biggest I've seen was caught by another Jenny from MS who is a spade fish catching rascal. Pulling hard doesn't say enough. You need a small but very strong hook especially for the big ones. Great eating and fun to catch.
