    How about Saline River?

It isn't salt water, but it is called the Saline River in Central Arkansas, about 15 minutes from my house.

I had a chance to go with a good friend who has fished this river his whole life, and at almost 81 years old that's nothing to sneeze at:

We hoped for some walleye and brownies, but they wouldn't cooperate. But we caught a mixed bunch of crappie and bass just the same.

We only had about three hours to fish in this howling wind. One of the highlights of the day was the bald eagle that tried to land in a tree over our heads, but spooked away. The wind got it before I could get my camera out.

It was a glorious day with a good friend....Our good Lord does indeed give us "richly all things to enjoy."

    Re: How about Saline River?

All of them were black crappie....we call them specks around here, but I understand that's a different kind of fish in other places. Three were over 13 inches and one was 14. Had a fish fry for the family last night. Nothing like straight from the water to the frydaddy.

Another couple of weeks and we should have some ice-chest-full kind of days. The wild plum trees and yellow jonquils are all saying that spring is around the corner -- but we had a pretty good frost Saturday morning. Maybe that's the last one.

I fish the same river a couple of hours south. I live about 1 mile from it. I plan to set a few trotlines on it this weekend, Lord willing.
