Headed down for a week June 10th-17th

Anybody got any tips on what type of rig to use in the surf? I have some pompano rigs, plugs, jigs, water cork straw rigs. Any tips would be appreciated.

I also plan on doing some pier fishing, so thanks for the daily updates.

The rectangular search box (upper right corner of this page) has gobs of information on surf fishing for pompano, whiting, and redfish. There's more info there than you can shake a stick at (though I can't think of a good reason for taking that particular action)! Good reading!

Don't nobody tell him nuthin, if he is. Just kiddin'. You can tie better pomp rigs than you can buy, using 10# fluorocarbon. Check the Search feature, and look at some you tube videos. Wish I was there to show you; good luck.

If you bought the pompano rigs premade they probably have a 2/0 hook which is way too big for pompano and whiting. Replace them with a #2 or #4 which is still strong enough for most anything you will encounter on the beach. You will need 1oz or 2 oz pyramid weights to keep your pompano rigs in place, sometimes more when the surf is angry. If you like to cast lures then try a pompano jig/teaser fly combination or a 3" Gulp shrimp on a 1/2oz jighead bumped on the bottom. Google "ghost shrimp pump", learn to gather them and use them for bait. Sandfleas are great for pompano and slot redfish. Sometimes I tip my pompano jig with a sandflea (or a piece of shrimp) when the bite is slow. Where you fish is just as, if not more important than how you fish. Look for some irregular feature in the sandbar such as a cut or where it makes a point close to the beach. You may have to walk half a mile one way or the other from your condo to find THE spot. If you just fish straight in front of where you are staying you may never get a bite and have a honey hole a hundred yards up or down the beach from you. The bite is usually best early and interference from swimmers is minimal and sandflea colonies are much easier to locate in the wash. I, however am olderly (not quite old or elderly), overweight and downright lazy so most of my trips down there this year have been spent mostly on the pier and seawall at Perdido Pass.

Kissing cousins. In other words way down the line. Wouldn't help me out much as I am an Auburn fan!

    War Damn Eagle.

For whiting, keep it simple, smallest egg sinker you can get away with, bead, swivel, 12" 12# mono leader and a #4 hook.
And remember they might be right at you feet, start close, right in the beach trough and work your way out. Most guys are casting past the best whiting spots.
