    Great pier etiquette

As I was walking out toward the octi for a look around this afternoon, a man was fighting a king as it headed toward the mid. From the looks of his equipment, he may not have been too experienced, but he was chasing after his fish with a gaff man close behind. On the way he got tangled with a lady and they tried to get untangled, but couldn't, and the lady was the first to call for a knife to cut her line. I had my assisted opener in action right quick and told her that it was mighty nice of her. She said, "I'll cut my line for a king anytime," and her lady friend voiced her agreement. I know a lot of folks who feel the same way, but there are others who seem to feel that somebody fighting a fish is ruining their day. I wish they'd learn as good an attitude as these two ladies. Brightened up my day. (He got the king.)

I'll never forget last year when I was fighting a bull red that headed north, and encountered two men with four lines slack in the water. Not only did they make no effort to help me get past them, but they complained that I was going to tangle them up (no sh!t) and one of them informed me that I needed to control my fish. Wonder what color the sky on his planet is. (I lost the red.)

When I was sixteen I hooked the king of a lifetime off the old pier. I hooked it due south of the octagon and it ran SE, then turned and headed down the east side of the pier. I saw two tourists fishing bottom rigs on the east side and I yelled within plenty of time for them to reel in. Well they didn't and my king ran under their lines with their rods leaning against the railing. They didn't make a move. Soooooo, I reached out, one by one, and bit their lines off at the rod tip. Just in time, too, because my king was heading under the pier. Luckily, Mr. John Dotson was waiting with a gaff and nabbed my king as it tried to slip under the pier. 40 pounds, thank you. I walked to the pier house and bought those guys some new bottom rigs. Karma, ya know.

Don't claim to be Hindu, but I for dang sure believe in karma. Lived too long and seen the old proverb, "What comes around goes around" too many times not to. And even if it doesn't come back around, doing the right thing is never a bad thing.

Yeah, Karma can have a bad aim at times too ;-)

Great story George, thanks for sharing. We need more anglers like that to teach the ones 'from other planets'! LOL

My favorite line from "The Ballad of Cable Hogue":

Remember, " 'Vengeance is mine,' sayeth the Lord."

Hogue: "Well, that's O.K. as long as he don't take too long and he lets me watch."
