Going for Some World Records "Line Class"

Ok, after some very thorough research (sorry jeb), I have decided there are some easy (yeah right) world records to obtain in the 2# line class in both regular tackle and fly tackle.

I'm planning to go for some of them. There are certain rules and stipulations which must be met--which shouldn't be an issue (such as minimum rod length; top shot/leader length; etc). I am certain some of you have made the lists somewhere, as I've spotted a few similar names on the IGFA site. So if you have any informative or illustrative advice to throw out there, please do.

I have picked up some support from certain manufacturers of fishing products who are going to send me stuff for free to promote their products (I did not ask for this--but was contacted through facebook and email directly *shakes head*). Now I am kinda required to move forward with this "idea."

Anyhow, I will need some assistance in coming weeks/months (in my case, probably years) from anyone willing to help. Photography and video is most important, and possible access offshore for certain species and knowledge of their whereabouts. I think I need someone who is certified to document a record catch as well; and I need someone with more experience to explain to me how that process works--as my brain begin releasing smoke signals of overload as I read through pages upon pages of rules.

I already "unofficially" smashed the blacktip shark record--by far, and I am positive other, much larger species, can be caught in similar fashion. There are some species which haven't even been landed on 2# line yet and are wide open.

My first goal will be landing a King Mackerel on 1# Nanofil (which tests just under 2#, and will be perfect for the 2# category--IGFA's lowest official line class). I may bump it up to 2# Nanofil so I dont short-change myself, provided its strength does not exceed or bump me into the 4# IGFA class. Yes, there are better lines out there, but my purpose for going with Nanofil is its incredibly small diameter compared to other Uni-filament superlines (0.001" diameter). I can get a moderately sized reel between a 2000-3000, and literally put 300-600 (maybe more) yards of this low test line on it--making catching larger fish possible when I cannot stop a powerful run.

As far as the King goes, I only need to catch a 25#er to break the world record, and after playing with those sharks on a 24" toy rod and 1# - 5# line, I know for certain I can do it. I will need a spot on gaffer for sure, as I cannot offer much control or support at the pylons when the time comes for capture. 15' top shot just isn't enough from the railing downward. If I cannot succeed off of the pier, I'll take the goal to a boat, but I'd much rather the record come off our lovely pier before moving further out.

Anyhow, thank you in advance for any support given, and hopefully we make this a team effort. If you're up to the challenge, feel free to compete as well. I'm doing this only for fun, and I plan to keep it just that.

It will be awhile yet. I will be required by the "sponsors" to use their gear and products and record the catches. I am still waiting for the products to arrive. Some have made it, but not all.

I can't think of anyone who has a better chance, especially from land or pier. You've been using the light gear for some time and not just as a record-breaking stunt. Maybe we can start a "world record hall of fame" thread for members.

Also, although the IGFA tests a length of each submitted line individually to account for differences in batches, I would suggest searching online for information on lines which test within the parameters, particularly for Nanofil and braid which tests pretty high (knot strength is not considered). A good scale to get a weight while the fish is fresh is also important and the IGFA will pre-certify scales for members if you have a Chilliton (sp) or other good spring sale. I was surprised to read that IGFA thinks spring scales hold their certification consistency better than digital.

Nanofil isn't a braid, but rather a uni-filament. As such, it is actually weaker than mono because of no stretch.

That considered, what makes it better for me is greater line capacity and it's smoothness giving me better control over the fish than braid or mono.

I believe my original assessment and review of their product was a bit off and premature. The line is so smooth that it does not hold a double uni to braid or itself if adding more spool to a reel, thus costing me an estimated 120# tarpon on 6# class a year ago.

What I did not consider was making crossovers using 12 inch splices of mono in order to increase capacities or special ordering longer spoils from Berkley.

I try not to be biased in my assessments based on name brand alone--hello, it's Berkley! But I am guilty of that when I first review the nanofil. It was simply a new style I wasn't accustomed to and I'm very glad I gave them another chance.

I hope to make better use of nanofil in times to follow. I will be using some brands of mono and fluorocarbon for this record robin as well. I will not be using any form of braid.

I already have the annual family membership.

The details are still very comprehensive.

I'm guessing you have seen this page already, but if not Paulus Just Fishing has some line testing results that may be useful in your planning stages.
