Gaff or Net?
I'm headed down next week for some pier therapy. I am planning to buy a gaff or some kind of drop net this trip. What are the pros and cons of both? Where should I buy one? I love this forum-can't believe I just found it. Thanks.

Re: Gaff or Net?
First off: WELCOME BRANDON! :yippee:
Second: why would anybody want to put a hole in a perfectly good fish unless the HAVE to?
LOL, just MHO because 95% of my fish fit in the net (30" diameter) :-[
There are usually plenty of gaffs around this time of year.(RETIRED) mostly.

Re: Gaff or Net?
i would say net there alot cheaper and you can fit most fish in the net like he said and if its to big for the net plenty of people will have gaffs and they will gaff him for you

J&M tackle on Canal rd can help....they have nets and maybe a couple gaff's too....I don't put toothy fish in my net, it is light duty netting and they eat holes in it quick and replacement netting are hard to find, for me anyway :boohoo:
have fun on the pier and watch others how they are doing things :fishing:....fish on.....good luck
I have both.....but find myself using the gaff more....now if I fished the shallows(where there is NO fish..... LOL) I think I would be using the net way more.Bill..............

Re: Gaff or Net?
Coming from a guy who owns a gafff but no net, if I had to chance to choose again between a net and a gaff, I would opt for the net.
#r's brother has this net http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/st...es&Ntk=All which I used to net this fish for him.

I was impressed with this net and told Robert so and he told me it was a $15 crab net from Academy. If they only knew it was to be used as a pier landing net, the manufacturer would cut back on the quality or Academy would jack up the price.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll go with the net. I hope I'll need it!

Like #r said, there are plenty of gaffs out there and some people just love to gaff fish for anybody. If there are some mice (youngsters) out there you may get more help than you want. There are also usually plenty of nets out there too, and the mice like to net fish also.
If you fish at night, I would definitely go with the net, there aren’t a lot of the regulars out there at night, usually.

Educate me a little bit if you will. What are good turbidity numbers? If you can check those stats and determine what the water looks like before you go, that would be VERY helpful!
