Gaff & Crabs?
Mornin' Gentlemen: A couple of questions from Ol' Stupid Up North, First of all, in the hands of a novice, is a drop net going to work better than a gaff like Ironman makes? I know when gaffing a salmon you have to really give them the heavy injection for it to stick. I would think that pulling up on the gaff, it would be even harder to make it stick. Secondly, My bride of 50+ years would like some fresh crab. I can't find any regs. on the matter for AL., FL yes, but not AL., is it legal to put a pot out in Jan. & Feb., would a person get some if he did, what would you use for bait. Thanks guys, and have a good day.

With kings and spanish, if the gaff is sharp it is an easy stick. Sharks and reds need more umph. Net's are useful for more kinds of fish and for catch and release. But toothy critters and large fish don't work with nets. So far, I have two gaffs and a brand new net. Just wish I lived closer to use every day.

Thanks Rich, Sometimes I wish I live closer too, from Oct. to May. From June until Sept I'll take the trout, the walleyes, and the salmon the first week in Oct.

1st Why would anyone want to put a hole in a perfectly good fish? ;-) lol
2nd Crabs (males) are sometimes slightly active in Little Lagoon in mid winter (IF it is mild weather).
You are fine to put out a trap (pot) then...
AL recreational crab regs
Hope this helps!(RETIRED) mostly.

Thanks Pier#r, You made a very good point when answering question # 1. Your knowledge about fishing and all things related to fishing is amazing. Thank you so much!
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
