Forth of July Fireworks
i just got wind of the Pier being used again this year for the Fireworks display. I would have thought that lessons were learned from last years unfortunate and probably avoidable fiasco due to an explosion that tore a huge hole in the pier.. Fireworks displays are an integral part of the festivities during the Fourth of July.. However, Last years accident, not only damaged the pier but it delayed fishing for more than a day. I've attended many fireworks displays and their generally activated from barges.. I dont think its a good idea to tempt fate by using a FISHING PIER owned and operated by the state...

One of the reasons they use the pier for the fireworks is if there are rough seas, the show can still continue. Not to mention its probably much cheaper for the city of Gulf shores to do it from the pier rather than having to rent a tug and barge.

Re: Forth of July Fireworks
Our tradition was to go to the Public beach to watch the fireworks, then go eat at the Shrimp Basket before going home. The barge was always off the public beach so you could feel the explosions of the fireworks.
There is plenty of parking around the public beach, but now the fireworks are way to the East. There is no parking within walking distance to the pier, unless you use shuttles. So, we started going to the Warf last year.

The sand they use ruins the boards and aged the octi overnight! No offense but shooting them from the beach would do just fine. Cleaning up that mess was awful.

Doesn't matter much to me, as long as they put on a good show and no one gets hurt. Can definitely see the advantages to using the pier. You can drive a firetruck and run lines up to it while still shooting them over the water. Hopefully they've learned their lesson well enough to be careful though. Even if they did burn up part of the pier, the repair is minimal since they can pop out the sections and replace them. I'm thinking park at the pavilion and ride bikes to the east park walkway where they have a place to leave bikes and the big boardwalk to the beach.

Wouldn't matter if it was tied on a ling rod or not Peaches, you would find a way to choke it some way some how. Now tying it to a king rod is a different story. You would nail it every time.
