    Flounder Rigging

My wife and I will be coming to the pier for a week in May. We fish mostly for flounder with bull minnows on a Carolina rig. I have been tying my hooks with a palomar knot. Is there any advantage to snelling hooks rather than the palomar knot? Also, I use 12 lb. mono with a 20 lb. flourocarbon leader. Is this ok, or is there a more preferred set up?

That's pretty close to what I use. I do use a snelled hook but I snell it with a uni knot. I started fishing for flounder using braid last year and have been impressed of how much better I feel them. I think I'm going to use it again this year.

What size and style hook (circle ?) is best if you are going to snell it?

I use 17lb for leader...I think the smaller you can get away with, the better. You may have to use the drop net a little more often but it's a good trade for more feeds.

    Re: Flounder Rigging

I have used kahle hooks too, but seem to catch more using circle hooks. Sometimes it's hard to detect a bite and I think the fish spits the kahle hook before I can set the hook. The circle hook seems to always find its way to the corner of the mouth no matter how lite the bite. I am still trying to find the perfect set up and heard snelling was the way to go. Just need to know what style and size hook to use. I am practicing snelling an octopus hook with 15 lb. fluorocarbon leader (very challenging for me because it is so stiff). Whatever Harley uses must be the ticket because last year he left with a limit by 9-10 am 3 mornings in a row while we were there.
