Fall trip planning
Starting to plan my fall trip, and due to a number of members suggestions, it will be mid October. Can anyone suggest a clean (BEDBUG FREE), reasonably priced hotel within 15 minutes of the pier? I'm currently boycotting the state park campground since they're claiming that it's a resort and pricing accordingly. Otherwise, I'm open to camping too. I stayed in the state park campground 7 years ago, and aside from having to tent camp in an rv site it was very nice. They even let me camp at the "primitive" rate. Not so anymore... "resort tax" added to camp fee, and the road north/west of the campground is now closed to motorized vehicles.

I've stayed at the Microtel in Foley a time or 2. Nothing fancy but it was clean and quiet. I've read bad reviews but have always been pleased. We always get the room with the sofa and sink. Usually around $75-$100 a night. There's a Publix right next to it which always comes in handy

Check out VRBO for fall rentals - over 1000 places under 100/night in middle October. Rate go way down in the fall and winter, and some lagoon front places are 75$ or less.
Good times, Good friends, Great Beer. You can buy all three - But it's always better to invest the time to make your own.

So is it just you, Matt? If it is and you don't mind a small space, I'd second the choice of the Microtel chain. They're located just north of the intracoastal canal. As the name suggests, they feature small rooms, but it's much better accomodations than a tent! While there are some attractive rates for VRBO, pay special attention to the FINAL cost, which often includes a cleaning and parking fee.
If you're staying for a week or so, the cleaning/parking cost at VRBO averages out a little better, plus - If you stay at the Gulf Shores Surf and Racquet Club property, you get to use their lighted docks (last time I went by there, though, the main light was burned out) . There's often some great October speckled trout, redfish and flounder fishing there at late night. It's located just west of the Little Lagoon bridge.

VRBO has apparently been bought out. I understand they now charge homeowners an additional few with every rental. Was a good thing while it lasted. I have stayed at the Microtel when I was in town on business. Small and no frills but in the $50-$60 range in the off season. Can be noisy because the property is adjacent to the airport and the military boys train there from time to time.

My girlfriend will be with me, but neither of us mind a small space. I'd like to stay Monday-Friday, and spend my weekends driving to and from the gulf. We briefly talked about VRBO, she's familiar with it, I'm not. I'm the frugal one, she's more willing to spend for comfort (though as I get older I'm starting to agree with her more and more). Our trip down in may was pleasant, we camped about 25 minutes north, but still gave in and stayed at a hotel in Foley one night mid trip (Too warm and humid for my northern blood. lol). Thank you for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

Rates fall off after the shrimp festival ends on the 9th of October. Look at specials by the local rental agencies and if you will book a four day or seven day package at one of the off beach locations you can get the average per night down to near a hundred per night with tax and cleaning. I like Little Lagoon locations. I had a seven day pkg at GSSR in mid May for less than 800 total. They were working on the light problem the day I left.
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
