    early morning of spadefish

I spent a morning on the pier last year while camping at the state park. Wandered around for a while with my zebco and pyramid sinker catching small fish from the schools in the shallow water. Caught a couple of spadefish and began to repeat the pattern. Caught on a multihook rig I picked up a walmart. Each hook had a small colorful lure and when tipped with a piece of sqid the fish seemed to like. Caught and kept 10 spadefish and a small bluefish. Filet'd the spades like a big bream and fried them up for an afternoon snack for the family. They turned out very good. I will be on the pier one morning next week and plan to repeat. I am interested in floating live bait but think I would rather stick to a productive pattern with limited time. Does the multihook rig have a name? Is there a location on the pier to target for my pattern? Any advice on lure color?

That would be called a Sabiki rig.

Spadefish are one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. If you get one of the larger two hook sabiki's and tip it with shrimp or squid and fish out at the end off the west side, you'll land some Spadefish that are dinner plate size.

Good job on your catch. Color of the rig doesn't matter much for spades. They are a very curious and hungry fish that takes a little finesse to hook up.

Thanks for the reply. I will be the semi-lost vacationer with a sabiki rig and a big smile one morning next week. Hopefully will hook up two or three at a time like last year.
