Do the fish stand a chance?

Since there had been a lull in postings lately, I figured I'd throw a topic out there. If you respond, please list one "new" technology that has made fishing more efficient for anglers, but tougher on the fish. Successful fishing still requires a degree of finesse, but with all the "improvements" in technology, do fish really stand a chance? One item per response please.

Actually circle hooks are one of the oldest designs of fishing hooks known with some archaic finds predating written history.
Of course the modern metal alloys have pushed the design limits beyond the imagination of even older present day anglers.
