    dead pelicans

I read on face book about pelicans found dead on the beach near the pier. Said suspected fishermen were killing them. Surely this is not happening!!

I sure hope not, but from all I've seen, the fishermen may cuss the birds but are very careful about releasing those that are hooked or tangled. Of course, it only takes one a$$h#le to kill a pelican----

I've made that point before - cuss em but go out of our way to free them. Most that is. There are a select few that just cut 'em off and I've seen several pelicans with gotchas hooked between body and neck. A death sentence for a bird that cant feed or fly.

There is a special place in hell for people who abuse animals. And killing and pelican is abuse in my book..hooking one on accident is one thing, killing them for no reason is another...whoever did will get theirs.....

Don't know about a special place in hell, but it certainly ain't a good thing to do.
Also, don't place a lot of faith in Face Book - more than one FB story has ended up on here and proved to be BS.

Which pier? I didn't see it but I know I always bring them in and remove any hooks...I wish everyone would. It's a shame that one or a few can cast a bad light on all fishermen. GT

This fb story is true,. I talked to the Park Ranger today after we caught a young pelican and got a Gotcha out of his foot. The bird could not stand up to take off. The line had been cut and was wrapped around the leg a bazillion times, took forever to get it freed.

Sam was doing fine when I talked to him Saturday.
Didn't see him today. Sam doesn't hangout at the pier as much as he did before his broken wing.

They were pretty much accusing fishermen of killing them on purpose because they are pests. I replied to the post and let them know that I saw several of them hooked last week, all by accident and all were netted, gently handled, unhooked and released.
