Commercial King Mackerel Season Opens 7/1/16
Commercial King Mackerel
The federal commercial King mackerel season for the west subzone, which includes Alabama, will open July 1, 2016. Alabama state waters will open to commercial harvest as well. Federal permits are required for those commercially fishing outside the 3 nm state waters and the Alabama commercial fishing license is required to land those fish. Alabama licensed commercial fishermen targeting king mackerel in state waters are not required to have the federal permit but are limited to the 3 nm state waters.

How much does this typically affect the "local" king population?

I don't think much, there isn't a big king mac commercial fishery in our area.
Go out to about any reef or rig off OB/GS/DI any time of summer and catching a limit of kings is easy.Carl
