cobia season's coming!!
i know its early in the year, but with the whole 60-70 degree weather thing, i figured it might be worth asking, has there been any cobia spoted yet? and if not, ya'll think they might be in by the last week of march? just bought myself a handfull of ling jigs and made a couple of eel rigs, looking forward to seeing some action on both. :fishing: :yippee:
I figure it this way, if everyone in the world had a lie clock, whose hands moved once every time they lied. You could use any politicians lie clock as a ceiling fan.

Re: cobia season's coming!!
Have any fish been spotted yet, I seriously doubt it. As far as teh eel rigs go, you might as well leave them at home unless you plan on fishing from a boat. Good luck with the action of fish from the pier. The numbers of fish being caught from the pier has declined over the past three years.

Re: cobia season's coming!!
Pcola is a first shot pier and if you haven't ever fished for cobia before I wouldn't recommend going over there. Navarre is similar to GSP in being a fair chase pier, but you will find some of the best cobia fishermen on the emerald coast fishing there. Keep the Eel rig for boat fishing.

If you can fish, your fine at Navarre,
It's still early for fish and we have a cool down coming,
If you want to know when to start staring, then keep your eyes on boat reports to the east
Give a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years

Re: cobia season's coming!!
best chance for new bees(like me)..... is Panama city piers....before the boat gantlet and the rest of the piers...... I have seen the most down there and before Navarre was rebuilt a handful of the Pensacola & Navarre guys were down there (GW,M Moore,Boo, Calvin,& a few others)....as Pest said..... the numbers have been down on all the piers the last so many years.... good luck....I like catching fish more then looking....but always have a rod and jig rigged to sling close by if a pod is seen
oke1:
If I was going to target them..... that's where I would go, for the best chance.... Panama city piersBill..............

When we have mild winters the cobia run is slow to fair. The fish cut across the Gulf instead of following the coast line. The rigs and anchored ships off of LA and MS and West AL have much better years when it's warm because the fish didn't get hammered along the coast.

I've heard a few people that said Texas had caught more long last year than in yearsGive a googan a king, and he can eat for a day. But teach a googan how to kingfish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years

Re: cobia season's coming!!
I would like to catch a cobia just to see what all the fuss is about. Kinda had a chance last year. There was a big one hanging out under the pier and it flashed out headed toward my bait. Thought it was a shark and so I pulled my bait away. Later on, the Gainer hooked it but he lost it. After seeing him bent nearly double trying to turn it, I knew there was no chance for me, anyway. Just watching, they seem to fight like a big flathead catfish....a slug fest.

Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
