    Re: cero mackerel

I've never heard of one being caught up this far north and they are not listed in the AL Record Fish list.

    Re: cero mackerel

Me neither Carl, though a few area anglers have claimed to have caught one.
Odd though, no one ever seems to able to produce a picture as evidence. :
Most likely a case of mistaken ID from a small king (with spots) or a large spanish mac.
Another oddity is that the global distribution map for this species on FishBase shows the whole Gulf of Mexico as their range... :-\
It sure would be cool to see one in person! VERY distinctive brown bars on the sides 8)
A truely beautiful mackerel (their name means "painted mackerel&quot...

Bill, I saw a fair number of 'high skying' mackerel in Costa Rica (Pacific side).
"Sierra" they called them, and they too looked like a cross between our king and spanish macs.

Either those or cero would be a hoot from a pier as are our two species!
    (RETIRED) mostly.

    Re: cero mackerel

Right after the oil spill I caught two or three of what I though were juvenile cero mackerel. They have the distinct horizontal bars running down both sides of them. They were mixed in with the spanish we were catching at that time.
