    Braid with mono leader

Got a stradic 5000 for Xmas and I put 20-braid on it. I prefer working with mono though. For those with braid using mono extension on braid how much do you put on? My thoughts were to just put on enough to get about 4-5 wraps around the spool. THX!

I use braid on bottom topped with mono. The braid is necessary in order to get the total yardage needed at times; especially on smaller reels. I have enough mono to fish with. The braid is for runs.

I put a 3-4 inch piece of black electrical tape on the spool, then tie the braid to the spool. Make two wraps and then tie the braid using a uni knot. Pull real tight. Wind the braid on with a lot of resistance. It will not slip and spin on the spool.

Never tried it, but have read that if you use a little mono on the spool and then tie the braid to that to keep it from slipping, it is good to use 10 - 20 wraps.

    Hope this helps. Good fishing.

I like to put a hundred yard or so top shot of mono on my reels that I have braid on. It is easier to see, tie knots in and get tangles out of. The braid, as you said, is in case a large fish makes a long run.

I use 50 to 100 yards as a top shot. Its really just personal preference but I think most use around 100 yards

Thanks for all the suggestions fellas. I think I will go with about 10 wraps worth of mono on the spool, I don't really have room for 50yds, I already fully spooled it with braid. I'll see how this goes and adjust as I find what I like. Thanks again!

Oh yea, about the stradic...it is a FINE reel. I have never owned a high gear reel like this, only ever used 706, 712, 714, which are excellent reels too, just slow. Taking some getting used to when winding in, it has a 6.2:1 ratio, pulls like 32" in per crank. Very very smooth reel too. Was lucky enough to land a decent speck on it when I took it out for my first test run and it handled very well. These are pricey reels, but so far I'd say it was well worth the money my FIL spent to buy it for me for Xmas!!

I have recently purchased the Stradic 6000 , and it takes up 41" of line per turn . It is going to take some time to get acclimated to that also . I'm going to use mine mainly for spanish so I'm going with 200 yds. of 12# Sten Magnathin Mono. Just have an adversion to all of those knots .

    Nice reel!

I personally prefer to just have the braid all the way on the spool or as backing (for more line capacity).
Double sided sticky tape around the spool shaft will prevent braid slippage and provide a 'cushion' for the line without another set of connecting knots.

On the business end, uni to uni is an easy knot to learn and use to join equal strength mono to the braid as a 'top shot'.

And I like this quick knot to join the braid to a mono 'shock leader'...

    Here it is being tied...

    Hope this helps!

I use a surgeon's loop to a Yucatan knot. It works great and makes a small knot. I use it for connecting 30# PP to 50# Ande Mono for a casting shock leader surf fishing. The double line from the loop is the way to go. Its pretty easy to tie when you get the hang of it. The directions say to use 15 raps for braid but I have not been able to get that to work it will not slip no matter how much spit.
I just use 7 raps and I holds great. I start out a little long and after retieing a few times I still have enough around the spool.
I have just used 50# PP with nothing and it works good for less than 8 ounces.
Just use a breakaway cannon with a spinner so you don't cut your finger off.
