Penn ssv 6500 bailess or bailed are tanks. Better IMO than the new 706 they're def stronger

The great thing about the 706z is the simplicity of design and that lovely sound they make. As for boat fishing, I would honestly recommend something with a bail if you aren't experienced with a reel that has a manual on it. I have heard lots of great things about the new penn battles.

It all depends what you mean by offshore, what are you trying to catch? Anything with 300 yards and a smooth 3 pounds of drag will catch kings.

About any Penn reel over 6000 size will probably be good for offshore. I like the 706's and bailless reels. If you really want to catch something huge on a spinning reel the new Spinfisher V's come in all sizes up to 10500. The 10500 is huge and when i say huge i mean like a spinning reel for marlin. It holds 350 yds of 40# mono

+1 IF you're wanting a spinning reel to catch something besides kings (that won't break the bank) it'll be hard to beat the 'guts' of the Spinfisher V series (20#-40# Max Drags)

40 pounds of drag is pretty extreme, as in you will want to be wearing a stand-up harness if you are fighting anything with that much pressure for long at all. To put this number into some perspective, a Shimano Tiagra 50 (that is a giant gold billfish reel if you are unfamiliar) only lists 37.5 max pounds of drag at full. For typical offshore trolling stuff, a drag setting of 18# or so is normal. Usually if we are going heavier than that, it is for big amberjack or other reef fish. Last weeked I was jigging amberjack with a Battle 8000 and it was sufficient, but none of the jacks were much over 20 lbs.
If you have something that can whip a big jack crevalle off the pier pretty quick, than you can tame just about anything with that. Nothing under a hundred pounds will fight more than a #30 crevalle.

Why not use a conventional? The Penn 209 or 309 would hold plenty of line.

For the price the battle is the best bang for your buck. 100$ Reel with a spool and roller bearing. I have the 6k and 8k models and have used them for about anything. Even killed a couple nice YF on my 8K.
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
