can you catch blues in the winter? and if you can were at? thanks.

They are available at the pier and West Beach Pass (Little Lagoon) and the WEST side jetty at Perdido Pass (Alabama Point jetty).
But THE most consistent spot I have found them is over the weir on the EAST side of Perdido Pass (Florida Point).

do you use artificial or live? i would they would be sluggish in the winter.

[/quote]Here we go again... #r, I know the weir in the GSP on 135, but I don't know the weir East of Perdido Pass (FL Pt.)
Is that the low stretch in the middle of the jetty that is usually awash?

Yes, there is an underwater wall (weir) between the "rock Island" and the (short) jetty on the east side of Perdido Pass (Florida Point).
Live bait (shrimp mostly) will get eaten up by the bluefish at times and some days I can NOT fish for sheepshead or pompano because of them.
They may respond well to surface plugs (like Skitterwalk) early and late in the day and I have had good luck throwing artificial soft plastics (like 4" Fin-s) on a 1/4 ounce jighead during the middle of the day.
It's not so much that they are 'sluggish' as they get very wary when the water is clear and reluctant to come up to the surface.
Thus I have to fish deeper and slower to get the bait (or lure) in front of them.

Used to be they could be targeted under the lights on the west side parking lot at Perdido Pass,
butt hat option no longer exists

I've had some luck when they're blowing up bait over at DI last summer.

one more question do you use wire or mono leaders on your bait?

Chili: spoons are great (like you mentioned) in summer and fall.
This time of year they are feeding more on mullet and whatever bay anchovies or other small fish or crabs and shrimp they can find around the rocks.
That's why I go to the soft plastics ;-)

kk: I use neither on my hooks (bait fishing) until I start getting consistently cut off by bluefish.
And then ONLY after trying a long shanked (Aberdeen type) hook like Tru-turn.
Then I'll go to 20# or 30# clear mono or a 3"-4" piece of 12# 7strand wire.
I start out with no leader on the jighead soft plastics, but will switch to mono if I get cut off.
But I will use a leader on my hard baits (usually just the trace of wire) when there are blues around.

BTW, the Alabama state record Speckled Trout was caught by a guy actually targeting bluefish with a hard bait (Rapalla diver) and a steel leader. ???
