    Blood worms

Has anyone ever used blood worms off the pier/surf. I know they are from the NE coast, but I have heard they are pretty popular for fresh and salt water. Thanks

Don't think we have the same species of bloodworms/sand worms that they collect & use for bait up north. Or if we do, they are not as easily collected.

I've uncovered many whilst slurping ghost shrimp but the longest bloodworms were only 3"-4" long and barely the diameter of a hook.
They make great chum though ;-)

The ones I've seen are 6-10 inches long and big around as your pinky finger. They bleed like crazy when stuck and have 4 teeth and will bite you. I may order some live ones and try them in April when I come just for the heck of it.

Apparently they will be at least $10 per dozen.

Here's some reading for those who might want to learn more about them...

I'd be curious to hear what eats them and other details.

FishBites make a blood worm just like they do for shrimp, crab and all the other fish foods.
They use bloodworms a lot out east.
I had some leftovers in my tackle box and used them off the beach and caught plenty of whiting rather than let them go to waste.

Mostly an East Coast bait ,but even those come from the West Coast . Not saying the do not have them . This just happens to be my experience . Never encountered a bait shop on the gulf that had them .

Wouldn't they be here already if they are supposed to be here? I wonder.
