Best bait for a pinfish trap?

What is the best bait to put into a pinfish trap? Been using mackerel and bonito with no too much luck, any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    David

    Survey says... Shrimp... #1 answer!

I have always put pogeys in my trap and never had any trouble catching pinfish.

If I use shrim, should I use live shrimp or just plain bait shrimp from a market? Which would probably be better, shrimp or the pogies?

    Honestly,
I was being just a tad facetious.
While shrimp work, just anything the Pinfish can pick at should be catching'em.
Maybe you need to move your trap?

I have always had fine luck with the carcass of a mackerel or bonito after it was filleted. Pull it after an hour or so to keep the pinfish from getting out.

+1 carcasses work MUCH mo betta than whole fish.
Just check out the HEALTHY pinfish population around the pier these days :

any suggestions on catching a bunch of them? I don't think they allow bait traps there. Wanting to take some out for some offshore fishing.

A sabiki (or gold hook rig) with tiny pieces of shrimp, or better yet squid or cut bait.
And by tiny, I do mean TINY.
Just large enough to be 'bitesize' for the pinfish and on a VERY small hook like a #10.

Fish near the beach by the dropoff (color change).
Bring a BIG cooler or garbage can on wheels with plent of aeration.
In an hour or less you will have ALL you need! :headbang:

    Take em all... :yippee:
