August Fishing 101
Several of you have asked about fishing in August While I don't like the heat and don't fish much in July & August I realize that some of you have to go when you can I too did that for years So here are some suggestions on what I have been doing and learned
Perdido Pass- Loaded and I mean loaded with schooling Spanish right now Wife and I out with niece and nephew on his boat last two days and caught 32 & 42 respectfully and left them biting and never left the jetties Out at 5:30 AM in by 9 All caught on bubble rigs People catching them from new fishing area at seawall and jetties I'm not going to walk the jetties but some of you may Key is early morning or late afternoon Try the seawall If late afternoon take the wife Enjoy the sunset and catch fish After dark and early morning before daylight spoons around lights should produce Keep it simple While I think these fish will be there each morning throughout the month try them if not go have fun with the family or go swimming etc
Pier- Again Early morning Late afternoon Same plan as the Pass If you see then try Spadefish with fishbites and a small piece of fresh dead shrimp under a cork with small split shot Fish for them just like you would a bream or bluegill Should get some sometime during your trip If not go enjoy some of the other things this area has to offer
Little Lagoon- I'm catching flounder croakers white trout and an occasional speck at the lagoon side of the Pass mouth If you have a boat or a Yak try that Can also catch them wading Bull minnows of carolina rig or fresh shrimp or cut bait If you are staying at Surf & Racquet Club or Sea Oaks live shrimp or countdown rapalas under the lights on the piers there
Fort Morgan- Fished this area and Dixie Bar this week Nothing but catfish and a few sharks I'd leave this area until the Fall
Surf Anywhere- Haven't fished this but again early morning Late evening Carolina rig with fresh dead shrimp should catch you something Try some fresh cut bait too
Fort Morgan Marina- Fish their docks for $4/day Flounder specks and white trout Easy access Go out on the pier to the second walkway for the boat slips on your left Go to the end Live shrimp under popping cork will get you white trout and a speck or two Preference again is Late Evening and early morning
Hope this helps Again Keep it simple and enjoy !

Funny thing is out here in Texas I can't stand fishing in July or august either. But at least down there you usually have a little breeze blowing. Out here your out on this hot lake with no breeze with water mocs swimming all around you. Thanks for all the info. Told me what I was looking for.

Thanks for the info Dan. I'm gonna try the surf in the morning. I'll use shrimp on a Carolina rig. Hopefully I'll get some bites, but just being out there on the beach is a great day for me

The first 15 years of GS vacations I was limited to summer trips. It was hot as hades and any time from 10am to 6pm was spent in the pool, or in the AC. Sun rise on the surf and back to the house for breakfast by 9. In the evenings, we would put the kids to bed at 10, and head to the dock around 11. Lighted docks yield HUGE trout after 11 pm. Just remember, fish gonna eat. You just have to be there to feed them when they do.
Good times, Good friends, Great Beer. You can buy all three - But it's always better to invest the time to make your own.

Hello! Really appreciate great info. We are trying our first trip to the pier this week. Do you know how they are biting and do you have any other suggestions for some fishing rookies with kids?

Welcome to the forum. Check the pier reports and use the search feature. Would go into more detail but it's early and I'm on my way out fishing. Good luck.

Going to be a little tough with kids If they are young I'd get them a sabiki rigs and tip it with small bits of shrimp which they could jig over the side almost assuredly catch something Try just north of restrooms If you are close or don't mind a 15-20 mn drive down Fort Morgan road live shrimp under popping cork at Fort Morgan Marina (think they call it Gulf Shores Marina at Fort Morgan now ) should get you some white trout fishing where I described They have the live bait and even rod rentals if you need some Call ahead of time to make sure they have bait Also surf as described should produce you something Good Luck ! Have Fun !
Well, after several hours making phone calls, I was able to track down a certain manufacturer’s service center in California. Thankfully, they agreed to send out my needed parts. These were left over...
You would think I would know this!
