    another gem of a rod

Might have found another gem of a rod (old school conolon) at a thrift shop, waiting on the 1/2 price day (next tuesday) another 2 piece that will be handy for traveling in the future ....unless I am blessed and able to move closer in the near future(my dream)
I love the one John g redid ....my favorite live bait rod

stopped back in and there were 2(identical)....I believe 10+ footer.... looks like surf rods with longer grips....no markings on the blanks(I believe customs) but no metal ferrules either at the connection ....that I like, for the 2 piece rod
may have to get them if still there Tuesday on the 1/2 price day and at -15 , I really hate leaving the house

just bought them, but never looked at both....got home and the first guide was bent on one, tried to straighten and sure enough broke....darn it....now need replaced...hope I remember all John g showed me, did just watch a few video's on you tube replacing guides that helped jog my memory, that has been leaving me lately now time to put together a rack for the hand tying ....being cold up here ...something to do inside during this extremely cold winter.....not sure if I want to strip the whole rod or just replace the one guide....the other looks good , and the rest of the one looked good too, so most likely just replace the one bent and broken now....

I need the practice and this time without an audience, laughing at me, in the office at J&M....as I was having much trouble on the practice blank and 1 guide

Thanks John g it was a pleasure watching and learning your techniques with years of experience!!!! it is and was appreciated ....we will see how well I do....repeatedly.... till I get it right

Sounds like some great finds ! Just curious ,how do you go about stripping the finish from a rod ? I have a two piece rod with that old brownish -tan finish that I would like to redo . Not sure what chemicals would react to the fiberglass in a negative way . If I could get it half as good as the one you and John did I would be pleased .

knife/razor blade, but mostly the knife(those 5.00 ones J&M sells, that I like) 90 degrees to the rod....the paint on the other rod just stripped off with a little elbow grease....then light sanding after that till done(emery sand paper maybe 240 grit??)....I think John cleaned with asitone ?? but I would make sure of that before doing....just to make sure.
yep 20.00 a piece might have to try surf fishing unless they get cut down....10 footers are a little long for the pier....I think the flex is a little lighter then the other one too ....won't really know till it's used, but for what they cost..... OH WELL

there were 2 layers of paint on the one redone....the green ugly and a black primer....John used a razer blade for a test section to show what was hidden.... but set me up with the knife for most of it....he did use the razer blade on some small areas (detail) these are painted brown but not ugly(looks like fiber glass now to me in good light)....if I choose to upgrade all the guides, I will see what is hiding underneath ....they are on the small side in diameter compared to the other....heck I should add a picture or 2

maybe someone will tell me they are no good

I don't see anything wrong with the coloring on tha rod as is .It is a smaller diameter that the one I'm working on . The one I have is an old Berkly Tru Sport made in the USA. I'm thinking it is going to be a real bear to strip. Not sure it has that nice honey color underneath like the Conolon . Thanks for the info , Bill
