What do you use to catch them off the pier ?
You don't catch AJs from the pier. You need a boat for that, plus I believe their season is closed until next year.
They have been caught from Navarre Beach Pier.
We used to catch juvenile AJs at Okaloosa and Navarra all the time back in the 80s and 90s but they weren't legal size. All were less than 12". I have never heard of a legal AJ being caught closer than the Allen wreck, about 7 miles out.
Every now & then, bar jacks show up at the GSP Pier, but they are tricky to catch.
Maybe you mean Jack Crevalle, which show up regularly. Just need a MH spinning rod, reel with 250+ yards of at least 15# test and a live LY, dead cigar minnow or spoon or plug and cast into the school. Odd are you will get ate whether you really want to or not. Then its 30-45 minutes of blood, sweat and tears..
Yep, I've heard people call crevalles amberjack consistently, for whatever reason. The two bear little resemblance to each other. I guess folks get the word "jack" stuck in their minds.
The amberjack is delicious, the crevalle---meh.
Good to hear from you, Justin.
No resemblance at all
