Only place I know of that regularly has it is the baitshop/seafood market over on Dauphin Island Parkway, just north of Fowl River.
I'm pretty sure Fresh Market Seafood has it (often?)
They are on Hwy 59 @ County Rd 10 just north of Gulf Shores.
Not sure about places on the island (Gulf Shores, OBch)
Thanks ! I'll try the Fresh Seafood Market .
Some of us can ask them next time we stop , maybe this weekend. But I will tell you something else...if your into FLAVOR....there is nothing better than some of those fresh caught Gulf mullet, salt and peppered, battered, and fryed up. Now there is some Flavor there, makes red snapper seem like oatmeal.

TP is so right about fried FRESH Gulf Mullet!
About 30 years ago I drove my Jeep to the western tip of Dauphin Island. There were 3 young fellows who had pulled an all-nighter already there when I arrived at the end. Yhey said the fishing had been slow, and they were right. Well, about mid-morning, one of the guys asked if he could borrow my cast net and a few net throws later we had more mullet than I could believe.
Now for the good part; having come prepared to spend the night fishing, they were equipped with a propane fish cooker, oil, corn meal, a couple loaves of white bread and big ole bag of grits! Well, they invited me for lunch and it was game on. Those mullet went straight from the driftwood filet station to salting, peppering and corn meal coating and then into the hot tub.
We quit fishing and ate fresh fried mullet, grit and white bread till we couldn’t move. I never saw those boys again and don’t know their names, but I will never forget eating that gourmet meal at the west end of Dauphin Island with what were truly, Good Ole Boys!

Great story Fin! I can remember when I was a near baby, in the 40's, frying up Fresh Mullet at that cement ramp leading to what was a pier at the tip of Fort Morgan, closest to the fort, at nite, and on the radio we got a report that a Hurricane was headed to Mobile Bay, didn't have as much early warning back in them days, it started raining and was getting windy, so we had to gather up our stuff and get outa there. Don't remember which storm it was.
I Checked with Fresh Market at 59 and cr 10, they didn't have any smoked fish, said sometimes they have some smoked mullet salad.
I guess Fresh Market mainly carries smoked mullet as a fall/winter item.
This may not be smoked, but almost as good in book.
IF you get a chance check the FRESH fried mullet at the Original Point Restaurant over in Innerarity Florida. :headbang:
