The rib bone's connected to...
the backbone, etc.
When filleting fish we often run into a set of bones that run perpendicular to the backbone above the (pleural) ribs that are found around the stomach cavity.
I finally found out from

these bones my dad used to call "Widow-makers" are actually named epipleural ribs.

Yeah when I was a kid we always had slices of white bread on the table in case one of those little widow makers got hung in your throat.
Be careful going home, sons wife is from upper Iowa, her grandmother passed today so they will be headed up shortly, hope all that is gone by the time you all get there
