Hey killer, how are you able to post while in school? Lol
i have a computer in...... school!!
Figured that.........already! Just did not know that they let kids surf the internet while in...........school. How about the 3 Rs? Do they still have that?
Yep, school just isn't what it used to be for sure, no truant officers, no paddling, no child left behind, guns in school instead of a good ol' meet me at the flagpole fight, "as long as you try that's good enough", participation trophies where everybody is a winner, not keeping score in sporting events and soccer. I'm getting old I guess, well hell.
im in high school and everybody has a computer and we only have 5 days left in school so we arent doing anything at the moment.
You and your parents should feel that you are being shortchanged by the school system. This post ^^^ alone tells me that you are being cheated. As corny and out of touch with modern culture as he may seem, I can relate to Phil Robertson more each passing day.
Its the end of the year, give the kid a break. He's on a computer on a fishing site for good sakes, NOT smoking a joint in the bath room or skipping all together, like we all did back in the day.... My how we forget how we acted when we were 17.
Nothing new anyway, 30 years ago when I was in high school, we didn't do squat the last week of school either other than take finals.
In any case, most Mobile Public schools have finals & EQT testing this week, which means testing during 2 periods and basically study hall the rest of the day.
If all kids were like Garet,Derek,Emerson,Michael and Ben there would be very few youth problems in this country. Keep it up young men, don't let these know it alls stand in your way,y'all are our future.....
This "know it all" taught for 5 years and I can assure you that posting on an internet forum during the school day is not a part of the curriculum. As a parent and tax payer, I'd be PO'd. As a teacher, I'd be ashamed.
Thinking these guys shouldn't be on the internet during school hours (unless doing assigned work) has nothing to do with what kind of kids I might think they are or are not. It's a criticism of the school program and the teachers that allow them to do it, not of the kids themselves.
Times have changed with schools and not necessarily for the better.
To add one thing - this has nothing to do with the last week of school. This is a discussion that goes back a couple of months at least.
Take it easy on him. Who is to say that instead of talking to his gf on his break, he made it to a computer to put his two cents in on a subject that he is interested in. There is nothing wrong with that. I dont know what high school age kids do down there in their spare time near the beach, but up north, if you didnt hunt and or fish, you were more likely to be doing less desirable activities.
Let's hear it for Carl F and Kingkiller. It has been fifty years since I was in high school, and that's the way it was back then, too. ---And there were paddlings at school then, and if you got an award you earned it, but we still didn't do squat the last few days of school and the teachers back then would probably have loved for us to have computers to keep us busy/entertained and out of their hair.
I also think that there is a h#ll of a lot of room for improvement in our public school system and that the bureaucracy and our legal system have made it horribly difficult for teachers to do as good a job as they are capable. Sometimes I think it's amazing that kids come out as well as they do, and that is testimony to good character and good parenting.
Somebody else can stand on the soapbox now.
When I was in school it was a normal sight to see shotguns or rifles in the racks on all or trucks depending on what was in season. You would have thought camoflauge was the school uniform at times. I used to turkey hunt about three mornings out of the week with one of my coaches. He would always write me a pass to get in class. HaHa! My how times and people change.
The coaches kept us busy the last few days of school back in my day...cutting grass...cleaning up...packing up...but it sure beat sitting in class doing nothing...Dive Deep brought back some old memories.. paddling at school was like a walk in the park compared to what was waiting at home....and they always knew before I got off the school bus....
I wish I was a senior in high school again....and know what I know now.....
i wish right now was like the old day's
Other than finals, we spent the last week of school cleaning up our classrooms: washing & dusting the entire room, desks, shelves, etc.., turning in & organizing books, etc.... We also had field days, playing softball etc...
I remember the November of my senior year: the bus driver let me leave my trapping pack, coat & waders in the bus so I could check my muskrat trap line after school. Of course I lived out in the middle of nowhere, most of the kids in our area lived on dairy farms. Everyone hunted, fished and/or trapped. I even remember kids bringing shotguns & rifles into wood shop to refinish them. Wasn't a big deal as long as you did bring ammo and the teacher knew.
We got finals till wed, this is the first year in my 8 years of grade school where we are acutualy doing somthing the last week of school, I gotta confess though, friday at 1 pm (when we get out) odds are I'll be at the fairhope pier and won't leave till it's time to work, then I'll go back, and repeat this over and over again, stopping every wed. to go to the GS pier
The "good old days": like back when there was no internet, no computers, no cable TV, no TV at all, cars had no air bags, safety glass and lasted 50,000 miles before they died, no AC or central heat, no vaccinations or antibiotics, no refrigeration, had to ride a horse to get to town, most people lived to be maybe 50, chances of surviving childhood was less than 50/50,......, those good old days?????
Hindsight is always 20/20 and tinted by rose colored glasses.
i like were im at now fishing, eating, sleeping, breathing!!!!
The only thing better about the old days than now is that my mom and dad were still alive.
One day you young guys will talk about your good old days....they won't be the same as ours...but ya'll will enjoy bringing them up....
Know exactly what you mean Haywire...
This is a very odd thread.
LOL
Yeah, I started to just delete the 'off topic' posts in the report thread which spawned this, but recounted seeing a 'new' thread (in Off Topic) could possibly have merit at least by defering blah-blah from the reports ;-)
Fire away boyz!
I won't inciminate myself too much by saying what all I was doing in HS, but I did fish and surf like a maniac and I NEVER missed a day of school to do it.
My mom worked too hard sending me to private school for me to 'blow it off' just to do 'fun stuff'.
And I worked too! Had to support my own habits ;-)
Spent many a late evening in front of those HOT grills flipping steaks with a sunburn from being on the pier or in the water since sunup.
Talk about yer 'afterglow' ...
But I was groovin on it.
Yessir, those were the 'good ole dayz' fer me!
Life brings REAL responsibility soon enough, so sow your oats while you're young.
But do it RESPONSIBLY!
It makes me proud we seem to have 'good kids' as part of our online community here,
even if they act that way sometimes ;-)
Hopefully they will continue to grow in the right direction!
Threads do take on a life of their own.....I'm ready to see one with 4 pages of replies from fish pictures. :)
Keep dodging the teachers at school to check the forum, guys. Shoot, I bet one or two on here have to dodge their boss to do it at work.
Am i the only one here who this thread has made me want to go fishing, eat a burger, and built fishing rods ????? :abnormal:, scratch that, that's all I ever want to do, lol and again :abnormal:
Rich nailed it. So what is the difference between posting at school or posting at work?
The difference is who pays for the wasted time.
Let me add this, John:
Let's say you have a big order to get out. Are you ok with the employee filling that order stopping to text message or post on facebook or GSPF.com? If you are, that's all good. That's your decision about how to spend your money. You've obviously made the right decisions based on the success of your business. But not all companies would agree with that. I've worked at places that have absolute internet blocks on all employees terminals and issue penalties if they are caught doing it on their phone.
Kids wasting time at school comes out of all our pockets and we pretty much don't have any say about it.
Let me add on other fact to give a little perspective on where I come from on this discussion:
I recently retired as a corporate controller. For those who don't know what that is, I was in charge of managing the company owner's money. Day's pay for a day's work. Whether it's internet or smoke breaks outside of regular break time, I see it as taking money from the owner. I see the posting at school in the same light. If it's ok for them to post in school hours they'll think it's ok to do it while they are at work.
Just my 2 cents worth as an uncool old guy who thinks work is for working and school is for learning.
I know I should stay out of this, but:
I just think it's great that we got us a bunch of younguns that love fishin and the pier. The forum keeps them interested and involved.
Even though I'm 60 I remember how I was at 14-15 years old at the end of a school year.
Perhaps we just need to make sure they stay focused on whats important.
They are the future.
Biggest thing I love about this forum is that everyone can have their own opinion in a discussion without it getting personal. It's a conversation and nothing more. I've been on many boards where this would have devolved into a personal pi**ing match. Generally, things stay pretty civil on here.
Again, this isn't about it being the end of the year. Posting during school hours has been going on for months and this is not the 1st time the subject has come up.
If they are like it was for me, when the internet was still only known to some of us nerds, they do it between classes or during lunch. Our phones didn't text yet then though. :(
