What are you fishing for?
Only thing you really need wire for in the surf is if you are shark fishing. And I will leave that answer to the shark fisherman in the group.
Outside of that, the only time you need a leader any bigger than 15# mono in the surf is if the bluefish or Spanish move in close, even then 50# mono is fine.
So large size mono is OK against blues with no need for wire. Fishing soaker bait for whatever as far as I can chunk it.
Yep, I use 50# mono for blues.
For a big soaker bait (cut mullet??), I am guessing you are targeting bull reds but you also might get a shark. Bull reds aren't known for being leader shy, so a short single strand wire leader wont hurt.
+1 on using mono for reds.
If you MUST use wire to target them the nylon coated 7 strand wires are best IMHO.

Proper functioning circle hook "can" make wire redundant.
