Grew up a block off lake Erie. Fished a lot, played ball, caddied at the country club, hung out at the swimming pool. Nothing most kids don't do. All those years of baking in the sun can have consequences. Had a cancerous spot cut off my arm last Thursday and surgery on my ear tomorrow. Nothing life threatening but next May you will see me on the pier in long sleeves and a hat that covers my ears!
Glad to hear it's nothing major and that you caught it early. I think the military considers sunburn a self-inflicted wound.
Yep. That's why you see me in a long sleeve, hat, and buff on my face when I am fishing and I may be wearing shorts but you can bet I have scould sunscreen layered on. I am only 27, but I learned my lesson at 15 when I had skin cancer. Like you? It was anything serious but warned that with my complexion that I was more susceptible to get it.
I may look 'slicked down' under that fashionable floppy wide brimmed hat, but I'm really slathered in SPF 50 and hiding from the sun.
Had almost as many peeling sunburns as a kid as I do freckles on my back which looks like a map of the Milky Way Galaxy.
11 years ago I had a growth the size of a quarter removed from my upper arm.
The dermatologist said I 'dodged a bullet' due to my past 'sins'.
We still get together every year to reminisce and thank God there have been no repeats.

I have used high SPF sunscreen for many years. I'm sure that my early-detected squamous cell skin cancer on my chest came from years of basking in the sun with no shirt when I was much younger.
The threat of skin cancer is just ONE of the reasons I keep my shirt on nowadays. I also ALWAYS wear a baseball-styled cap, sunglasses, and use SPF of at least 50, often SPF 100. And even with that, I stay out of the mid-day sun.
Place on the arm was squamous. Ear is basil cell.

Was at the Dr's for 6 hours! Lost about half my right ear. Plastic surgery Friday to repair.
Painful lesson learned.......Plus....screwed up pig & deer hunting trip planned for this weekend!!!
