This is true, My bluebirds showed up this mornin'

I don't know about the fish down there but I do know that my bluebirds showed up this mornin'. They will always show up with in a few days, either side, of St. Patty's Day. Sometimes they get snowed upon and if the weather is really nasty for a long time, they will die, but they are a tough little bird. They will come back and sit on the meally worm feeder until I come out and feed them. Usually the males shows up first, and then the females but this year they both show up at the same time. One Fall I counted 54 of them sitting on the high line wire, I'm sure that over 1/2 of them were transit birds but it was a pretty sight. I just thought that perhaps if the fish weren't biting, you would be interested to know this.:confused:

Just read an article here in the paper this morning that said a lot of Blue Birds have died this winter because of the weather this winter.

Our Bluebirds are year round residents. We feed beef kidney suet in the winter to help them get by. In the summer, sometimes Carolyn will take the cricket box and buy a tube of crickets, about a hundred, and set the box on the deck table. The Bluebirds will get down in the box and get 3 or 4 crickets at a time, especially when they have young to feed. She tells Buddy at the store she needs "bird food".

I know I have seen 2 different pair and they are looking at the different houses trying to decide on one. If they get an early start, an early Spring, they will raise 3 broods during the Summer. While one brood is fledging the male will looking for another nest. The female will take the fledging brood to a nearby big tree and feed them there for about a week, and the male will be building a nest and feeding the brood and the female will be laying eggs. When the second brood hatches, the first brood will help feed the new born second hatch, etc. They are really a hard working, interesting bird to watch. They are busy all of the time, from daylight to dark. I get tired just watching them. They migrate at night, that is why they showed this morning.
I hadn't heard or seen that it was a hard Winter for them. I think they migrate to the central US, and it was nasty down there, so maybe it was tough on them. They eat mostly meal worms and a few flying bugs, and bugs and snowflakes don't get along very well, and you guys had plenty of snowflakes. Thank you guys for the interest, and thank you Big Dawg for the info.

I cleaned my bluebird houses before I came down . Hopefully they will have started nesting by the time I return .

If anyone is interested, it will cost about $50 to get set up to raise mealworms for the first year. For that you will get about 5000 mealworms, 50# of bran & 50# of chick or duck starter. They will live in the bran and eat the chick or duck starter. Put the everything is a plastic tub and you all set for the year. Replace the sack of chick or duck starter every couple of years and that is the only cost that you will have. You will never run out of mealworms. They produce about 200 - 300 eggs and die. The dead ones you can feed to the blue birds but they will get spoiled and then only eat live worms. Order the mealworms on line and also how to care for the mealworms on line. They are very simple to care for and eat all kinds of fruits, vegetables and they love bread. Just make sure you do NOT put ANYTHING in the tub that has insecticide on it or you will lose the whole tub full of worms It will take a while before they start to reproduce so don't start feeding them before they start to reproduce or you may run out of them.
