Just got an email from Lamar and he said they had about half the down lights pulled but not pulling any panels. It would probably bust them apart anyway so they figured just put new ones in if they are blown out. HAHA!

Let's hope and pray it just as intact Wednesday morning!

Just saw an updated forecast calling for it to hit most of AL. Good luck all and be safe.
Y'all be safe tonight and in the morning! Prayers coming from us Indiana folk for all our southern friends in the path of Gordon.!
Rain bands are just now moving into our area, the eye wall is showing up well on radar now too.
Its going to be an interesting night.
You guys stay safe down there. Sending prayers from North Alabama. Keep us posted!
The pier closed @ 2pm
@ 4pm Buoy 42012 had wind gusts near 50 mph and seas over 11 feet.
Waves of that size can be seen (offshore SE of the pier) on these videos taken by Ritchie Russel...

Get everything tied down and stay safe under cover
6pm in Mobile and things are already getting a little sporty outside, winds steady around 20 mph with higher gusts.
I took a peek at the seas from the beach and with the short reach and WNW direction of travel the waves coming ashore are not that bad as far as something that might damage the pier. The waves are not very organized - really choppy. That may change in a few hours when the south wind hits, but I hope not.
I may be wrong, but I think the pier should be fine.
Edit: 8:00 pm - Ouch. Winds are dropping, but moving to the south. Wave heights are still building and the surge is increasing at Perdido Pass.
Prayers sent for nothing torn up any where
Ya'll guys stay safe..Prayers coming from North Ga
It looks like we dodged a bullet-not meaning that there isn't damage but it could have been much worse. Here on the east side of Foley there are a lot of smaller limbs down and a fair amount of ponding water, Wolf Bay is what looks like 1 1/2' above high tide.

Talked to pier. Lost 6 -7 boards/panels. Going to open soon to the octi, and shouldn’t take long (today) to fix the remainder.
Hiya fellas. Was considering planning a trip to the pier next weekend (15th and 16th), driving down from Birmingham. Just wanted to know if the weather will be cleared out by then. Any suggestions? I'd hate to make the trip all the way down and get rained out.
Glad you all made it out ok. Looks like it is our turn to get a blow this week here in the carolinas
Here we go again...

Now a 'high probability' of development by early next week!
And most of the computer models show a TS moving northward to the north-northeast by mid week.
This MAY be more of a Florida panhandle problem, but too early to tell for sure...

Tropical Depression XIV is expected to strengthen as it moves northward into the central GoM early this week, and become hurricane "Michael" before it reaches the Florida Panhandle...
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graph...e_and_wind.png
On this trajectory the GSPPier would certainly be spared the worst, but could still receive swells large enough to create problems Wednesday morning at high tide...
Looks like the slower it moves the farther east it makes landfall because of the approaching front. GFS is one of the more westerly forecasts, UKMET the most easterly.
Latest run (4:00 pm Sunday) has Michael slowing down and making landfall Wednesday afternoon east of PC, near Port St. Jo., but stronger as a Cat2.
Western edge of the cone is now at about the Florida line. This may not be our turn.
Whoops, I see Pier#r has updated the map, above.
"Michael" is now classified a hurricane and predicted to become a 'major' one sometime Tuesday until landfall Wednesday somewhere near Cape San Blas, FL.
Our forecast remains problematic due to the influence and proximity of this system:
The possibility certainly exists for swells of sufficient size to damage the GSPPier Tuesday night and thru much of Wednesday!Quote:

I hope they at least removed the 'down' lights?
They were pulling the down lights while I was there today #r
Praying for all in Michael's path. Y'all stay safe down there!
Did you all notice that the LOW on both Thursday and Friday is supposed to be 59 degrees?
That's in Mobile and other places inland.
It will be several degrees warmer on the coast because the water is still in the low 80s.
But Lower 60s in the morning sounds GREAT!

My hope is that a little cooler weather will usher-in the whiting and croaker bite. And maybe it will get the speckled trout/redfish feeding again! I suppose that asking for a king mackerel chew-down is asking too much?
Myself, hoping ALL the sharks freeze to death (slowly and painfully ;-)
Yes, maybe the bite will be more like what we expect to see in the fall.
Just wish the flies won't get too bad on the beach!

...EYE OF DANGEROUS HURRICANE MICHAEL MOVING NORTHWARD OVER THE EASTERN GULF OF MEXICO......LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE...HURRICANE FORCE WINDS...AND HEAVY
RAINFALL EXPECTED ALONG THE NORTHEASTERN GULF COAST...
Hurricane Michael is centered as of 1 p.m. CDT over the eastern Gulf of Mexico about 335 miles (540 km) south of Panama City, Florida. On the forecast track, the center of Michael will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through tonight, then move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend area on Wednesday, and then move northeastward across the southeastern United States Wednesday night and Thursday, and move off the Mid-Atlantic coast away from the United States by Friday.
Data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts - a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is expected, and Michael is forecast to be a major hurricane at landfall in Florida. Weakening is expected after landfall as Michael moves through the southeastern United States. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect from the Okaloosa County Line Florida to Anclote River Florida. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect from the Anclote River to Anna Maria Island Florida, including Tampa Bay, and from the Alabama/Florida border to Okaloosa/Walton County Line, Florida. A Hurricane Warning is in effect from the Alabama/Florida border to Suwannee River Florida. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the Alabama/Florida border to the Mississippi/Alabama border, and from the Suwanee River to Chassahowitzka Florida. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Chassahowitzka to Anna Maria Island Florida, including Tampa Bay; the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Mouth of the Pearl River, and from Fernandina Beach, Florida, to South Santee River, South Carolina. Interests elsewhere across the southeastern United States should monitor the progress of Michael.

HURRICANE WARNING IN EFFECT
TONIGHT Hurricane conditions. East winds 30 to 35 knots with gusts to around 60 knots becoming southeast 57 to 67 knots with gusts to around 80 knots after midnight. Seas 25 feet building to 49 feet with occasional seas up to 62 feet. Dominant period 11 seconds. Protected waters extremely rough. Showers and thunderstorms.
WEDNESDAY Hurricane conditions expected. Southeast winds 69 to 79 knots with gusts to around 110 knots becoming southwest 59 to 69 knots with gusts to around 95 knots in the afternoon. Seas 59 feet with occasional seas up to 75 feet subsiding to 38 feet with occasional seas up to 48 feet. Dominant period 11 seconds. Protected waters extremely rough. Showers and thunderstorms.
Michael is forecast to pass over (about 20-30 miles west) buoy 42039. That should provide some interesting data, at least for as long as the buoy lasts.
https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_pa...?station=42039
Excerpt from NOAA's 10pm Forecast
"Similar to the previous advisory, the environment ahead of Michael is expected to remain conducive for additional strengthening until landfall occurs due to SSTs of at least 85 deg F beneath the hurricane, combined with decreasing vertical wind shear along with the shear vector shifting from current west-northwesterly to a less hostile southwesterly component, which will be more along Michael's forecast track. As a result, Michael is now explicitly forecast to become a category 4 hurricane before landfall occurs. "
Indeed, "Michael" did continue strengthening through the night (to 140 mph) and that trend is expected to continue until landfall later today.

Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with those caught in its path!
Though the Alabama coast will be spared the worst, I fear with waves at 42012 now at 15 feet, there will be damage to the GSPPier. Pray God, for its protection! And spare those in jeopardy today!!!
https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_pa...?station=42012
Buoy 42039 has not reported since 4:50 CDT (the storm was still approaching).
Buoys 42040 and 42012 ("our" buoys) show wind and waves starting to subside. Maybe we've seen the worst for us. 42012 shows waves at 14.8, but remember, that is an average of the highest waves - individual waves can be twice that.
Has anybody put "eyes on" the pier?
"Hogman" is nearby.
