Snake Story
I won't say that I hate cottonmouth moccasins, but I really, really dislike them. The other day, after a hard day of mowing and planting plots, my buddy and I knocked off a little early to go down to my pond and see if we could get some fish slime on our hands. The pond and its pier are down a steep hill, and as soon as we got out of the jeep, I saw that there were two moccasins coiled up on the pier. (yep, I took pix but don't know how to get 'em from my phone to the forum).
Didn't want to go shooting holes in the pier with my .38 (no snake shot) so I lay down on my side so I could shoot parallel to the deck. I aimed at the middle of the coil of the biggest one and ruined his day---he hauled it off the side of the dock, but lots of little pieces of him hit the water off the end of the dock. The second snake was smaller, a little, which I will use as the excuse for missing him the first time, but it made him mad and he came crawling straight for me. That was not a good scenario---fat man with a bad shoulder lying on the ground with a perfectly healthy, pissed off cottonmouth coming from twelve feet away. The gun holds more than two rounds, so even though I missed him a second time, it made him pause and the third shot, well, the Good Lord called him home.
Oh, yeah, we caught several bass, too.
The story still isn't over. A couple of days later, Chile Relleno came to help me out, and we also went fishing at the pond. Damnme if there wasn't another moccasin coiled up in the grass right at the step to the pier. Chile almost stepped on him, but shot him with his nine instead. Kinda messed up the snake.
We caught bass then, too.
Anyhow, that whole thing has kind of made me jumpy ever since, and I've stayed on the tractor ever since. I know from past experience that the front end loader does a fine job of eradicating unwanted reptiles. Chops 'em right up.

i will have to post pics of my pond... I've killed 42 cotton mouths(2-6')this year alone... Out of all the snakes.. I hate them the worst..
some locals didnt believe me when i told them earlier that i had killed 20+ snakes, so i started taking them to my snake hole and made believers out of them. Its like one of them sci-fi snakeasarous movies with deadly critters hanging in trees and in bushes..

The horror... I just about won't harm a snake these days but cotton mouths rub me wrong. There is something about them that personifies pure evil. I got tangled up with one in Mississippi last year while painting our camp. Luckily I was moving a 8' stepladder and climbed it to keep from getting bit. There was a square bill shovel within reach and things went in my favor from there. We killed three in two days beside the camp house.

Heh... How did I miss this thread.
I tell ya what, Haywire showed me the pic on his phone of the Moccasins so I was wary as we hopped out of the Jeep.
Pond full of fish and very little human traffic is a snake paradise/buffet.
Looked around real well before getting out and before walking to the back of the Jeep to grab a rod.
I thought to look one more time as I turned to the dock and spotted the lil'bastard, damn near perfect camo in the leaf/straw litter and grass.
Two steps and I would have been standing on him. 124gr Speer Gold Dot put an end to his plans for the day.Ragnar Benson:

Killed a 4 ft. Long diamondback rattlesnake coming back from the deer stand today. 13 rattlers. I can't get pictures to post. Be careful for rattlesnakes going to and from your stand.

That's good eating too.
Skin, gut and wash
Cut into 2"-3" sections
Heavily salt a pot of water and bring to a rolling boil
Parboil sections for about 4-5 minutes
Remove and rinse under cold water
Dip in egg/milk and dredge in seasoned cornmeal or flour
Deep fry till golden
Meat will slide right off the bones.Ragnar Benson:

My Grandmother had a pond on her land up in Springville Ala and I always would take my .22 up there in the summer and always shot 3-4 on a good Sunday afternoon sometimes more. Little farm ponds are naturals for cottonmouths.

I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
