Two suspects were in custody and a law enforcment officer was injured after a person opened fire Saturday outside a Bass Pro Shops store in Spanish Fort, Ala., according to reports.
The gunman shot multiple times into the store's boat and ATV area outside the store, the Baldwin County Sherrif's Office said.
"He just shot up the entire place. He literally shot at least 50 times," store employee Davis Marrero told Mobile's WPMI-TV. "His wife had something to do with it, I know, because she was throwing ammo at him to actually reload and keep shooting.
"He was shooting two kinds of rifles, an AR-15 and what I'm told was an AR-10, which is also a .308, which is a more powerful round," Marrero continued.
One responding officer suffered minor injuries and was treated and released, WPMI reported.
The chief said Smith came armed with hundreds of rounds of ammo, several different firearms and was wearing body armor.“He had three AR-style weapons, he had an AR-style pistol, he had a 9 mm rifle, a shotgun, and two 9 mm pistols,” said Barber describing the weapons they say Smith came with. Barber said they don’t have an exact count right now on how many shots were fired but they recovered at least...See more

One of the guys I worked with over there took this picture after the perpetrator was subdued by LEOs...
This was taken from a second story window directly above the door the guy shot up.
@ 1:04 pm he posted on FB:Active shooter here at Bass Pro. At least 30 shots fired. He tried to ram a buggy cart through a door in Tracker. Several weapons in his vehicle. Daphne police chased him downHe was the only one firing and he fired more than one clip. His wife/girlfriend at least once handed him another weapon. He was apprehended by a policeman shooting him with a taser and he popped back up but was then handled by the police. Nothing but the highest praise for the way this was handled by the Spanish Fort Police.
And then:he was tased and wrestled to the ground. He was not shot or abused.
And finally:Perp was tased and subdued. No one shot, though he tried

This could have been so much worse if not for the quick action by store employees to lock the doors!

Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber says 38-year-old Robert Smith was tased and taken into custody following Saturday’s shooting.
"I definitely believe that our officers prevented what would have been a mass shooting incident. When they encountered Robert Smith, he had a bulletproof vest on. From the pictures I've seen, he had several weapons. He had three AR rifle platforms, one AR pistol, a 9 mm short rifle, a shotgun, and two pistols with several hundred rounds of ammunition for all the weapons," said Barber.

Still no motive has been released, but some relatives and neighbors give some insight into the young man's state of mind prior to the incident in this follow-up report...

He is really 'fortunate', because no one was seriously hurt, and he was captured alive.

Pier#r this is way too close to home for one of ours.
It won't make a splash on national news because good police work went the way they intended. But we will know.

Maybe the man planned to commit suicide by cop to become famous. Some very brave cops foiled his plan.
I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
