Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
So hoping a few people might weigh in, I'm interested in getting a handgun for concealed carry/self defense. Looking for something affordable, easy to carry, and will be reliable. Does any one have any advice on the best calibers, brands, ect. Have though about a revolver but like the compactness, and additional capacity of most semi.
Also, looking for a good self defense class if anyone knows of a decent one in the area.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I carry a springfield xd service model. It is a great firearm and mine has over 4000 rounds through it. One thing you need to do is practice religously as well as find a gun that is comfortable in the hand. One big thing for me is a comfortable houlster. Don't buy a cheap gun because you want one for safety, save up and get a good quality firearm. As far as rounds go, 9mm is to fast in my mind, but personally i like a 40 and 45 acp. Also if you can handle it a 357 is a great round.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I've been carrying a long time and have found you really have a hard time with concealing with large frame pieces . When you get into a situation where you need a weapon ,it is most likely going to be up close and personal . A .38 ,380 or 9mm is plenty of gun . In auto my pick would be nothing larger framed than a Glock 19 and for a revolver the Charter Arms hammerless Off Duty is a moderately priced choice . The most important thing is that you understand the responsibility that goes with carrying.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
Tofer,
The big trade off with a carry pistol is power vs concealability. There really is no perfect solution. One must compromize leaning one way or the other. The very best is to get one of each.
If concealability is your main concern you would do well to look at a Ruger LCP .380 auto. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes! Keltec makes a similar model without the fit, finish, and accuracy.
If power is your main concern, get you a .45 auto. I like Kimber Custom Shop guns but most Colt 1911 clones are good.
I do agree with the Pest, stay away from cheap pistols.
Be safe man.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
Only pistol I own is a Springfield XD 40cal. I'm very pleased with it, although my wife shoots it better than me.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
Just got a Glock 27, it is a subcompact 40 cal and is very concealable. Holds 9 rounds...and like Jeb said get a good holster. The only thing that some might not like is the fact that the grip is a little short although you can get a extender on the magazine.

This statement alone should make anyone second guess any notion of carrying a concealed weapon. The amount of time needed to draw a concealed weapon would be better spent actually defending yourself by other means. Let's pretend you actually make it to your weapon; unless it is drawn in a manner that you can actually shot the bad guy immediately (which is highly unlikely from a concealed position) then things become more difficult for you. At this point you would now be in a position of not only defending yourself but defending your handgun also. I might also add that your strong hand is out of the defense equation. We've all heard the expression "...could whop him with one hand tied behind...", well if that was truly the case why do you need a weapon in the first place?

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I have unfortunatley had to draw my firearm on two seperate occassions where there was no other choice and it saved my life in both instances. But one thing I tell everyone who wants to conceal and carry is when you pull the firearm you must be committed to using it. Fortunatley in both my situations I was able to resolve the conflict and get to a safe place where LEOs could be contacted and a report could be filed. Alternative dispute resolution should always be used in precarious situations, and a firearm should never be the first resort.

So if we carry a handgun, does that mean we can put a cap in our kings during the summer?

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
Good points. Am definitely leaning more towards the easier to carry options, either a 9mm or .38 sp. Not so much that I would need to carry it everyday in my home areas but I do want to have something when I'm out, alone, in areas where there might not be help around. When you are traveling to the bigger cities where you might not be as familiar with the area and people. I grew up moving all over the place and have first hand seen people carjacked, beaten by gangs, and assaulted in various degrees. Been enough that I know I don't want to be a victim if at all possible. Sure its always better to try to be smart in the situation but nice to have some backup too.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
There isn't a more reliable gun in my mind than a double barrell shotgun with a 20" barrell. The pattern that thing would throw would blanket a wall an most of all you don't have to worry about the round going through every wall in the house.

[size=12pt] I have a Rossi SS .38 spec, from when I lived in Mobile and then Montgomery. Never had to pull it, but driving through certain areas it was nice to know it was there. Simple to use and carry.

Also have to worry about other states laws when traveling.
States That Honor The Alabama Pistol Permit
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia,
Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi,
Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont
[Note: all law abiding citizens may carry a firearm in the
open or concealed. No permit or license required],
Wyoming.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
Up here in Liberal-topia there is no legal concealed carry or open carry. I see gun shops advertising that UT and FL permits can be obtained by out of staters at classes taught at their range. Anyone know the comparative merits of one versus the other?

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I recommend the Taurus TCP .380 automatic. It weighs only 9 oz. unloaded and is very easy to conceal. It is almost identical to the Ruger LCP, BUT the slide locks open after the last round allowing faster reloading. Just pop in a fresh magazine, hit the slide release, and you are back in business. My son carries one in a "wallet holster" in his back pocket. You actually fire the gun in the holster. Sounds awkward but it actually works very well. Looks just like a wallet in his pocket. Make sure whatever you buy is comfortable to carry, because if it is not you will leave it at home. Might as well buy a large frame with more bang if you aren't going to carry it. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I'm about to buy a Kimber Ultra Carry II - .45 ACP
Had one several years ago and sold it - much to my dismay.
Sweetest shooting, most accurate pistol I've ever shot. And that covers a fair amount of territory. There is a reason the .45 has been around since 1872. Very effective at stopping critters of both 2 and 4 legged variety.
If I'm not able to conceal a bigger pistol, I have a Beretta .25 auto that slips into my front pocket. Choice of last resort as effective range is about 4'.
FWIW - bedside piece is a Remington Model 870 12 ga, whacked off to 18" bbl w/ 5 round extender. Gives me 7 in the mag and 1 in the pipe of #4 Buck

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I have 3 that I like to carry depending on the weather and what I am wearing....but always try and avoid places that I might need them....with that said....sig-sauer sl .380...lcp-.380....Taurus millennium pro 45(in the winter)....in the woods, at my cabin..... always my glock 22 (40 cal.)
I have 2 permits....one for Ohio...and the other from Utah were it covers Alabama and 10 other states(that the Ohio doesn't).... on my travels....did an FBI background check for that one, and very extensive

Re: Self Defense/Concealed Carry Handguns
I've never fired a Glock, but as a civilian the trigger safety always made me a little nervous. I see where LEO's would like them, but I like the idea of a safety that requires a deliberate act aside from pulling the trigger to fire. Just my opinion, I know they are very fine weapons.
