Restaurant Review: Japanese Express... Owned by forum member Sammy.
My wife and I enjoyed a 'kid'less' lunch date Wednesday afternoon at the Japanese Express on Airport across from Providence.
Sammy, no holding back here.
Appetizers.
I started with the Japanese Dumplings aka Gyoza (type of Japanese pork filled dumpling) as these are normally a favorite of mine.
Though these were yummy, they were very hard and crunchy on the edges as prepared deep fried... Maybe overcooked a bit?
Just my $0.02, Gyoza needs to be prepped by steaming, then served as such or pan fried, not deep fried.
I'll probably not order these again.
My wife had the Tempura Asparagus, and the serving was very generous and the majority was delicious.
However, several pieces were the butt ends and were extremely fibrous and tough, left them on the plate.
Also, the type of batter used was unexpected, as it was not a traditional tempura batter, this was a crunchy crumb style batter.
Not a crispy on the outside & soft and airy on the inside, like a normal tempura batter... The batter on the War Eagle Roll was a normal tempura batter.
Tough pieces and unexpected batter aside, my wife and I shared this and enjoyed it, we'll reorder this dish.
Main dishes
I had the Hibachi Steak, the steak came diced over a bed of fried rice, sided with Sweet Carrots & Hibachi Vegetables.
The steak was juicy and flavorful and the serving was a good size.
The rice by itself was ho-hum... Sammy it needs something more, maybe some onion?
But combined with steak it was delicious and very satisfying.
The sides were great, the vegetables were tasty, not overcooked and the carrots not too sweet.
I wanted more... I will reorder this item.
My wife's War Eagle Roll took a good while to reach the table, I was halfway through my meal when it finally arrived.
It was a nice roll, good portions and delicious, my wife and I were pleased with it.
I'll recommend this roll, but be patient waiting for it.
Summary
This is Japanese Fast Food, nothing fancy, served on Styrofoam plates & aluminum pans with plastic ware or chopsticks
It is hot, fresh, much healthier than a burger/fries and the prices are very fair.
We'll be back and try some more menu items before we make up our minds, yay or nay.Ragnar Benson:

I really really really do appreciate your review chili. And I will look into your suggestion and make improvement. And I highly recommend our chicken hibachi. It's all white meat and surprisingly juicy for chicken breast that is cooked on a hibachi grill. It took me months of trial and error to fix the typical 'dry hibachi chicken breast' problem that most hibachi restaurant has. Once again I thank you for the business and your review.

The wife and I went to Airport Blvd location today and had the habachi chicken.
Sweet tea was just right.
It was grand at a decent price. We will be back.(RETIRED) mostly.

Went to the Gun Show at the fairgrounds today with my son & FiL, on the way home we stopped and ate lunch at the Providence location.
My FiL and I both had the Hibachi Chicken and it was good... Thanks for the recommendation.
The rice was really hot and moist with good flavor this time. We drizzled the Teriyaki sauce on it and chowed down.
Ordered the Tempura Asparagus again, no tough ends this time, and it disappeared quickly.
My son had the Tempura Chicken and French Fries, he was a happy camper.
Hot, fresh, filling and healthy lunch for $10. per person... Much better than some cardboard burger/fries combo.
We will be back.Ragnar Benson:

I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
