ray skin

I was wondering if any of you guys have ever tried tanning a ray skin?

Never tried it. I do know that shark skin was widely used at one time and is tough stuff. I always wanted a pair of boots made from triggerfish skin.

There is a lady in Opp that makes a wallet out of tanned trigger fish and shark skins. she used to be at the retlesnake rodeo but that has been several years. Dont know what happened to her. She tanned her own hides.

Never tanned it myself but I used to own a custom saddle that had stingray skin for trim around the seat. A lady out of Laredo buys it already tanned and she dyes it whatever color for the customer and sews it into the saddles she makes. It held up well for the two years I had it.

I have always wanted a ray skin wallet and thought it might be kinda cool to have it made out of one that I caught. Just got to figure out what to do with once I have it. I may just have to take it to a taxidermist.

Tanning fish skin is tricky business. Read about it here:About Tanning Fish Leather Bringing it to a taxidermist would be my call. If the rays here are similar to some of the commercial skins and finished product I've seen, it would be a nice way to making a trophy out of an otherwise lowly respected yet tough catch. Be sure to make something out of the barb too.

never heard of tanned fish skin but it sounds pretty cool

One of my H-D jackets has ray skin trim, pretty cool!
