Wednesday I was fortunate enough to be among the first public tour of the Gulf State Park pier since Mothers Day.
The pier has been closed since May 11th for renovations.
It was slated to reopen the day after Hurricane "Sally" came ashore (September 16th).
But Sally left the pier badly damaged, and even knocked down 4 sets of piling near the end "octi" leaving a 175 foot section missing.
There is still a LOT of work to be done before even the remaining shore attached section can be reopened.
I want to thank the Gulf State Park for providing this service to the public to see and hear what is going on...
"Coach" john Patterson was among those on the tour...

The pier is an active work site, with many projects being done to restore power, water, and repair/improve the pier...

These "pigeon spikes" being installed on the new 'turtle-friendly' lights will help reduce poop on the pier from herons and pelicans... https://scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net...8e&oe=5FF1FF57
The finished sections look great!

Kelly does a great job informing the participants of the history and current status of the pier.
The remote earphones were a fine asset to make her job easier on a breezy day and allow everyone to spread out... https://scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net...68&oe=5FF0A75A
The fully installed fish carcass grinder at the fish cleaning station on the mid platform will be a huge asset to allow the pier patrons to be "chum free" when the pier reopens... https://scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net...8b&oe=5FEED470
There were plenty of fish visible in the clear water.
Here mullet on the right and sheepshead filing under the pier (left center- downward)...
