The pier will close as contractors install sea turtle-friendly lights in time for nesting seasonPANAMA CITY BEACH — The pier at St. Andrews State Park will be closed for a period of up to 60 days starting Monday, April 23, as new sea turtle-friendly, ambient lights are installed.
According to an alert on the park’s website, the park is overhauling the light system to comply with state and county sea turtle nesting season light codes. Because the pier will be an active construction zone, there will be no water or electricity running out to the pier and it will not be accessible to parkgoers.
The construction window is about 60 days, but Christina Deason, a park employee, said if the weather cooperates the project may be completed earlier. Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1, so the old overhead lights will be out and hopefully new lights installed just as turtles begin to come up from the Gulf.
