    New (used) boat

    Guys,

Just bought a 1997 Glastron 175 SE with a 2009Volvo Penta 4.3l engine. Excellent condition from what I can tell. Only paid $2,500 for it! Think I got a steal! Bought it from my brother in law so maybe he felt sorry for me being married to his sister...LOL! Any input would be appreciated as to whether this was a good buy.....thanks.

    Brad

All that matters is if you thought you got a good deal. If you like it, it is a good deal.

Congrats! Buying the boat is the easy part, maintenance is what makes ya think about buying it. Have fun and be safe out there!

I have a good fishing buddy in KY with the same boat/power that we've been out on a few times. That I/O is reliable if cared for and pushes the boat in the neighborhood of 55mph with one person and a half tank of gas. The carbed version puts out 190hp and is enough to pull a tuber or skier with no issues, the MPFI version delivers something in the neighborhood of 225. The big limitation was the space issue for coolers and such in the 17' bowrider boat, but for 3...maybe 4 adults it is a nice little rig that fits into the garage. Fit and finish of the hull is average for the entry-level market that Glastron targets.

Even with the "brother-in-law deal", I'd still take it to a Volvo Penta mechanic and have them go through it before I ran it hard this season so you know where you stand mechanically and don't get a big surprise on your maiden voyage on the lake. Volvo is a lot less common than Mercruiser where I used to boat so finding parts and someone to work on the stern drive required a little bit of a drive. But almost all of the routine maintenance can be performed at home with a factory service manual that you can buy on eBay. Good luck and congrats on one of the most frustrating, yet enjoyable toys a guy can own.
