new Ascend fs12t
Anybody have, or used the 2014 Ascend fs12t? I'm looking for a decent fishing kayak and don't want to spend a ton of $$. It kind of looks like the Native Slayer

I didn't like the ascend line of kayaks from a visual standpoint. I don't know how well they track or how stable, and I just like a kayak I can lift by myself. The ascend at 83lbs... nah, I'm not lugging that around. Then again I'm an ocean kayak snob. Mine was 50+ lbs and manageable.

Yea, they are a bit heavy and not many people like them. But for $550 I feel like you get a lot of bang for your buck

I bought a perception pescador sport from academy.sometimes they are on sale for 499.the pescador is modeled after the tarpon.it has the same hull design and console.and I love mine,it tracks well, and although I am a small guy and I have to do it carefully I have fished standing in it.one of my co workers has the fs12t and had paddled my pescador he says the tracking on the pescador is much better.
The ocean kayak line that snake mentions is a whole other breed of yaks.I am to poor to buy one but would highly recommend them if you can afford them.

I feel the same way about them. Don't like the way they look and are very heavy for their size. You couldn't go wrong with the pescador for the price. I am currently saving up for a Malibu Kayaks Stealth 14. It only weighs 63# and is a bigger kayak. Tons of storage very stable(can stand on it plus walk all the way from the bow to the stern on it) and tracks well. Has a 550# carrying capacity and built in bait well. I am getting mine from Amazon for about $1100. They have a 12ft model that is a couple hundred cheaper. I shopped around for a while before deciding on this one. May be out of your price range but just a suggestion. You can also add a bunch of accessories to it as well like a trolling motor, Xing console, etc down the road to make it even better.

I have an ascend and have been very happy with it. Pretty stable, I really like the seat. I have fished all day comfortably and not had wet butt.
If I had $1000+ to drop on a yak I would go with a jackson cuda or native, but for the money, the ascend is a great buy.
In the price range you won't find more yak. Weight is not really an issue. I load mine in the back of the truck without any problems. I always launch close to the water so the weight doesn't bother me. It doesn't weigh anywhere near what the hobies or other bigger yaks weigh.
With that said if I were looking at getting a yak right now, I would be looking over the next couple of months and have cash on hand and buy a good used yak. Towards the end of summer guys look to off load yaks and you can get great deals. Also, hobie is coming out with it's new model and lots of guys have to have the newest and best so they are willing to offload cheap.
I recently saw a very nice used yak loaded in the $800 range. After tax and accessories, the ascend is going to run you about that. It was only a year old and was a $1200 new yak.

If you can drop the cash go ahead an get a Hobie so you don't have to keep trading up because if you keep kayak fishing you will eventually get one anyway so you may as well start with the best especially if you plan on fishing in the gulf you can't beat it.

Thanks, I'm trying to find a good deal on a nice used kayak but hate to spend more than $1k on a used kayak. Can't seem to find a good deal on Craigslist
I’ll be sliding into town March 10-14. Can you have it warm and sunny for me then? And also, how about having the fish biting??? :D
