    Joys of the Season

I may get rid of my refrigerator.

The weather cooled off after an unseemly spell of December warmth and last night I took pleasure in throwing a couple more blankets on the bed and sleeping with the window open (alone, at hunting camp). I was toasty warm except in the wee, small hours, I became groggily aware of a strange noise which I determined to me my toenails clicking together as the toes shivered from a strangely localized chill. Since I had to get up anyway (old man's necessity) I grabbed some more cover for the bed and crawled back into the warm spot. Just as I was drowsing off again, I was jolted back into wakefulness by the steam escaping past my ears---too hot, alarms going off, except for my toes. They were still two degrees above freezing and no change in position could change that. It's a good thing that my dear wife was not sleeping with me because in my partially awake condition I'd have pressed my toes against her, precipitating a sound thrashing accompanied by squeals and threats that would have left me awake for the remainder of the night.

Anyhow, I made it through until morning, and now that I've had my coffee I'm going to scrutinize the bottom end of my mattress to see what in the world causes it to freeze my toes. Once I determine the solution, I'm going to apply it to keeping my food and beverage cold and unplug the refrigerator. I may be able to refine it enough to replace the freezer, too, since it seems to have that potential.

Obviously, this has nothing to do with pier fishing, but I felt the need to post something so that my keypad wouldn't get rusty. I really don't miss fishing in the cold, but long absence has lent a certain attraction to the memory of leaning over the rail in a shivery December wind, looking for sheepshead to come steal the shrimp off my hook. In order to combat the attractive memory, I am going to go stand in front of the fireplace until the back of my pants get as hot as I can stand, then quickly take the few steps to my recliner and sit, feeling like I'm sinking into a hot bath. A hot beverage goes real well with this.

I hope all of you are doing well as we head toward the end of this horrible year. I'm hoping for better things next year, even though 'hope' is no more substantial than fairy dust, sort of like praying for rain. It makes me feel better, though.

    Tight lines, everybody,
    Haywire

That story reminds me, I need to get some of those battery powered socks for working up in Illinois this month and next. I haven't worked (other than paperwork) for a few years and my boots hardly fit anymore either.
People are shocked to see sharks in the water around here.

If you see natural water taste it. If it's salty it has sharks in it. If it's fresh it has alligators in it. If it's brackish it has both.

So the big question, Mr. George, is have you had a good season so far....got any good ones to tell about, or one or two that got away? Our rut is winding down up here, pretty well done I think. Deer are all on quarantine apparently, because they sure aren't getting out much these days.

Just curious about your season so far. May be just firing up good for you guys.

I'll second Rich's question about the deer. What have you been seeing? I consider deer hunting in Alabama every time we make a winter gulf shores getaway- I just haven't managed to do it yet.

Thanks for asking, guys. My season has been less than exciting so far, but not from lack of cooperation from the deer. For those who may not know it, I managed to take a bad fall and broke my back late last summer. Compression fracture. It is still healing nicely, but I find it painful to sit in a deer stand for very long, tree stand or box blind. Very long means about 30 minutes. My eagerness to kill deer has diminished greatly in the past few years---I said the same thing last year until that eleven point walked out in front of me, but that's another story.

I'm seeing lots of does and have seen a couple of young bucks. I have a group of does that hang out around the camp looking for tasty handouts and they keep me amused. I'd be glad to shoot a hog, but there seem to only be a few on my ground and they are only active at night when they play stud poker with the big bucks. I'll shift gears about deer hunting when the rut starts in January. Right now it's mostly about enjoying the woods and I can do that from my old golf cart without hurting my back.

Y'all take good care of yourselves and protect from Covid. That sh!t is real---it killed my stepson back in August. I'm going to be as close to the head of the line as possible when the vaccine is avalible.

It's about time for me to gather some cedar boughs and magnolia leaves to decorate my "Bah, Humbug" wreath. Not that I'm deeply into holiday decorations, but the scent of the greenery helps cover the smell of long underwear that's one day past washing and wool socks that have travelled a little to far.

I sure do miss fishing the pier.

    Merry Christmas

I sure hope to get back on the pier. I didn't realize how much fish I'd been eating until my supply ran out.

2020 has been a year that many of us will always remember. My son passed away the first week of January. Then all of the covid19 fears. Then I had a seizure in the doctors office in July and scared hell out of her. She had her stethoscope on my chest and suddenly turned white and told my wife. He has quit breathing. My wife took one look at me and told her that is what we have been telling her that has been happening periodically. So the rest of the year has been back and forth to many kinds of doctors for tests. I have about decided to stick with my therapy of a couple of drings of bourbon every night and just let what happens come on. At least the bourbon keeps me in a heppy mood to handle the curves.
At present we are hoping for a spring month at the beach since we missed our fall trip due to the hurricanes. Thanks to my well stocked deep freezer I am still eating fish. I just got out a flounder to thaw for tonights supper. My best wishes to all for enjoyable holidays and remeber the big secret is "NEVER SURRENDER".

Glad you are still with us. As has been said before, old age ain't for sissies. Hope I get to fish with you when the pier opens up.
