Hurricane Nate

So right now it's just a "Tropical Depression", but look at how quickly it's going to advance on the Biloxi/Mobile/Pensacola area. Landfall is going to happen on Sunday, so wind gusts will be in excess of 74 mph maybe as high at 100. As always, there's a threat of tornadoes associated with cyclonic activity.

Let's hope that the wind and wave damage to the pier is between "none at all" to "minimal" and that it just blows through quickly and devolves into a tropical storm/depression with very little property damage and no loss of life.

The standard GFS Model run this morning does not even have it as a tropical storm in the GoM. Intensity is very difficult to forecast, but we can hope this will be right.

This morning's run has Nate being dissipated over land in Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize and the Yucatan - then it fails to re-form over the GoM. We should know fairly soon if that is right.

11am NHC track update. Hurricane by the weekend still in forecast for the upper Gulf coast. Intensity biggest question... some models showing more... some less. Lots to watch for the central Gulf coast to Florida panhandle the next couple days. Yucatan has TS warnings/Hurricane watches up. Seems like the main factor is where it goes in the next 36 hours. More westerly is good for us.

Whatever it was that made the GFS predict Nate would go over a lot of land has disappeared from the model. Now back on the old track, just going over the tip of Yucatan and holding together.

Planning on heading to Gulf Shores for the week starting Saturday with the whole family. Should we think about delaying the trip until after the storm or might it be safe to just get there on time and ride it out in our beach house? This is assuming it will be a tropical storm or Category 1.

Tropical systems need water temperature above 82 degrees to form, build and maintain themselves.
Water temps along the northern gulf coast are not that high now.

Ride it out. It's gonna come a storm, so bring some board games or something else to do inside. Bring some candles and flashlights and enjoy everything nature has to offer. Well, hopefully not EVERYTHING!

OK, so say a fishing googan was planning to role into town Sunday afternoon; the nice SunCoast lady said it aint nuthin, the kids are excited about surfing....what should someone maybe expect? Is fishing shot for the week? What would you do if you had Monday through Thursday?

Pay attention to the surf warnings, regarding kids going into the water. There have already been too many incidents involving kids this year. As far as fishing goes - after a really big storm, the water will be roily for awhile. Personally, I LIKE catching sailcats. They pull like crazy and if you cut every bit of red meat (lateral line) out, they're good to eat. You may find them biting. Other than sailcats, hardhead cats and sharks (you can't bring them up on the pier), there may not be much else to catch from the pier until the water clears up a bit. When will that happen? When it decides to - there's no exact formula. But if you're going to be there anyway, you might as well get outdoors and give it a go!
