Brother in law got scammed, call sounded just like his granson and was pretending to be him, his grandson, calling away from home in Ca. was in car that was stopped, 5 lbs of pot found, Then a Lawyer talks to you, you get the idea, need money, and I can get the kid outa this right away.

I follow a simple rule, that covers me on any phone scam. Never spend a dime over a telephone, unless I had already anticipated spending money before I placed a call. If someone calls me they stand no chance whatsoever.

It is hard to underestimate how sneaky these folks are. Unless you have a secret word with your grandkid [prearranged and only they would know] do not rely on asking "clever" questions to get at the truth. They make a good living at this and you don't stand a chance.

Sure, I've heard some very compelling and plausible things as well. That is why I developed my simple rule. Don't try to outsmart these people, just say no.

They called him back the next day to ask for more money, he accused them of scamming him, they laffed, and said bad things about his mother.

... should have set them up with the FBI.
that's what they are for, and it would be sweet revenge ;-)
