A 17-year old tourist from Kentucky suffered a bite wound to her leg today while swimming the in the Gulf of Mexico behind a condominium at 1040 East Highway 98 in Destin.
Initial reports described the injuries as a scratch to her left leg, as well as a puncture wound on her right leg which will require stitches.
Witnesses say a five foot shark bit the girl while she was near the second sandbar around 3:39 p.m.

The teen was taken to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment.

The reports don't say what kind of shark, but why do the news people use the picture of a Great White shark for these Gulf Coast shark bites?

Of all possible species, that seems the LEAST plausible!

Sorry for the teen, but if your in the water, your not near the top of the food chain. ..your part of it.

Then she'll have some cool scar and a story, better than a tattoo.

How do you end up with a scratch and a puncture wound from a shark bite? Looks like there would be several puncture wounds.

For the same reasons that when ever we see an eagle soar, we hear the cry of a red tailed hawk. Entertainment, sell the papers. Why do sound like such a cynic?

I know I am being pedantic, but if you are out in the Gulf you are in front of most every condo I've ever seen. They face the Gulf.

DESTIN, FL (WALA) -A 17-year-old girl from Kentucky, who was in the area to compete in a softball tournament, is recovering after suffering a shark bite on Sunday, April 2. She has been identified as Caitlyn Taylor.
Officials say the teen suffered six puncture wounds from the bite, but was able to punch the shark as it was biting her to try to drive it away. Taylor was swimming in the Gulf of Mexico behind a condominium at 1040 East Highway 98 in Destin.
Witnesses say a five-foot shark bit the girl while she was in waist deep water around 3:39 p.m.
The teen says she initially thought it was dolphin in the water, however, it was in a wave headed towards her. She says the shark took her by the legs, tugged on her and immediately turned her lose. The type of shark is undetermined.
According to emergency personnel, the teen had scrape wounds on her left leg and puncture wounds on her right leg near her knee. She required 80 stitches to that leg.
She was treated at the Destin Emergency Room.
